The sky is not falling

To the editor:

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! We are approaching the "fiscal cliff." That's it, the end of our country.

It seems the Republicans go from one crisis to another. Give me a break. There is no fiscal cliff that will end our world on Dec. 31. What will happen is Congress will finally "pay the piper" for all of their spending over the past 12 years. Don't you remember that we had a balanced budget when President Bush took over and in one year under a Republican president and a Republican Congress, we were in debt? I remember. We were told that will stimulate the economy. Well, it stimulated the 1 percent and gave the middle class a 40 percent drop in their assets.

Yes, the Democrats have borrowed and spent money. Rhinelander should know since a local fire department got a $300,000 grant from FEMA, the city received $15 million toward the sewage plant and numerous other projects. This spending was a priority for the federal government? Hey, reality check - where do you think that money came from? It was either tax money or borrowed money. Somebody's got to pay and it is now sooner rather than later.

The payroll taxes were reduced. Do you know that money would have gone into Social Security to keep that system solvent? It seems we are a spoiled society and now we need to pay for our choices. The solution is that programs need to be reformed and taxes need to be raised.

This so-called "cliff" is planned reductions in spending over the next 10 years. Senator Joe McCarthy tried to find a Communist behind every bush in the 1950s. Wasn't true then just like this "cliff" isn't true now. We get spending cuts and tax increases if Congress does nothing. Seems like that is what they are good at.
