Complex problems don't have simple solutions

To the editor:

Fascinating stuff in the local area. The City Council is deliberating on whether or not to open up the free market by allowing gas stations to sell alcohol.

Up to this point in time, the city has been protecting liquor stores by not allowing the gas stations to compete in the alcohol market. So who objects to this reduction in government regulations? None other than our newly-elected Assemblyman who was elected running on a platform to reduce government regulation and who made his political name by opposing the government's move to regulate smoking in public places.

This just goes to show that most issues facing government officials - whether they are elected or appointed - are very complicated. Anyone who takes on these issues with the idea that there are simple solutions (cut taxes, reduce government regulation, do away with collective bargaining, drop a few bombs) to these complex problems is revealing a limited understanding of the world around us and how it works.

Let's hope that our elected officials are up to the complicated tasks ahead of them.

Let me say this about that. Then, on the other hand, maybe or maybe not. But don't quote me on that, okay?
