Reader defends museum volunteers

To the editor:

I would like to respond to the article in the River News and the Star Journal about the PPHC (Pioneer Park Historical Complex).

I would like to know if the friend of Dawn Rog's was a visitor or worker when she supposedly witnessed some of the paid workers doing things other than what they were supposed to do?

How did this person know what the workers were supposed to be doing? Was this the only person who observed these things? Did this person comment on this to workers and give them a chance to defend themselves? How did this person know if they were paid workers or volunteers? I did not observe the workers all the time but I did observe them some of the time and they did lots of things.

An example of this was when they swept the buildings and made sure all was in order and also picked up garbage around the museum yard. Another example was when Aprelle (Rawski, the former complex coordinator) raked the whole museum yard of pine needles, pine cones and branches and whatever else was on the yard. She then disposed of them properly. I could give examples of lots of things that were done over the season but obviously I cannot as there isn't enough space for everything.

I have worked at the PPHC for a number of seasons. I have worked under three co-coordinators and I have seen workers come back for more than just one season. I also know personally that they didn't come back just because they got paid but because they enjoyed what they were doing and enjoyed the interaction with the different grown-ups and the children. The workers that came back did their job very well from what I personally observed.

It is good that the job descriptions are being looked into and the workers will be told exactly what is required of them. Without that knowledge, as far as I observed, they did a darn good job.

I also know that Aprelle checked on them and if they weren't doing the job right they were told. I am writing this because I think the workers should get credit for what they do.

A meaningful endeavor turns sour in the delivery of nosey Rosie. With some the good deeds don't go unpunished.
Thank You Gloria.
