It could be you

To the Editor: Your son and daughter went to Hodag Country Festival to listen to some great music and have fun. When the police appeared at your door, you figured they'd been picked up for DUI or maybe had been in an accident.

It was way worse than that.

Just imagine.

Love country music? Sickened by the Las Vegas shooting? Me too. My son attends big concerts from time to time. Maybe you do, or your children do. It could have been him. It could have been you.

How many more kids will be killed? No one can predict. It's not going to stop.

What we can predict is that decreasing access to assault weapons will decrease the potential for killing people. Guns that can shoot fast can kill more people. Mr. Ryan is on the right track with his suggestion about limiting bump stocks.

Australia decided to buy back semi-automatic weapons in 1996 after a shooter killed 35 people. Violent crimes went down 59 percent over the next 10 years.

Even suicide rates by gun decreased by 65 percent. There was a proven link between the gun control measures and these outcomes.

Do you care what Australia, the country of outback renegades, did? Nah, this is America and we want our guns.

We should be so lucky that our legislators and our "recreational" gun sales stores would be renegade enough to stop selling assault weapons and enact other measures to protect our sons and daughters: people who gather only to listen to some great music and have fun.
