3/28/2019 7:30:00 AM Reder endorses Neubauer for state's highest court
To the Editor:
On Tuesday, April 2 we will elect a justice for our state Supreme Court. One of the candidates, Judge Lisa Neubauer, Chief Judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, is extremely well-qualified. She has a stellar record of the kind of judicial appointments that prepare one for the highest court in the state. She is also well-regarded by her colleagues throughout Wisconsin.
The other candidate, Brian Hagedorn, should be rejected by all voters who want fairness for all citizens. He is regarded as an extremist even by many of those who generally share his conservative views.
As an example of this, the Wisconsin Realtors Association, which represents the real estate industry here and normally backs conservative Supreme Court candidates, withdrew its support for Hagedorn and asked for its $18,000 donation back.
Why did they take this unusual step? Because Hagedorn's views about the LGBT community are so radical that they call into question whether he would even be able to fairly apply the principles of equality that our constitution guarantees.
As another example, he has received financial support for years from an organization that believes transgender people should be sterilized.
As a private citizen, Hagedorn is free to believe what he wants. But no court that is the ultimate referee on issues affecting our entire state should seat someone who is so far out of the mainstream. I hope you'll join me on April 2 in voting for the one candidate who is unquestionably qualified: Judge Lisa Neubauer.
