Reader shares thoughts on football program

To the Editor:

Having only lived in Rhinelander for only a few short years, I am a little baffled by the condition that the football program is in over the past 20-30 years.

The question that plagues me the most is - Has the school district hierarchy ever made it clear to anyone else that considers themselves as being "program participants", what their "clearly defined roles/responsibilities" are?

At this point, no person in town has been able to answer this question. There seems to be a defeatist attitude that has developed among the district staff. Just about every opponent in the conference views Rhinelander as a loser, and pencil them in immediately as a win as soon as the schedule comes out for the next season. There are students who want to play football but don't because they don't want to play for a "loser", have more confidence in winning a championship on their PlayStation game console than going at least 5-4 playing varsity football at school. There are only a small percentage of players that have a real passion for wanting to win. Every player that practices during the week should play each Friday night regardless of their talent level. What's the point in going to practice when you know that the coaching staff has no real intent on giving you any playing time on Friday night? My question to all the current players, and students that have thought about playing, is this - What would motivate you to work hard in the off-season so that you can make each of your upcoming opponents hesitate to think that your a "loser" already in their mind?
