34 cold dead hands
To the Editor:

Seventeen people. Count 'em. Seventeen - students and teachers - dead. That would be 34 cold dead hands, not the two hands that Charlton Heston held up in a video years ago.

High praise for hospice
To the Editor:

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ascension Hospice of Rhinelander. The hospice team provided invaluable support during my husband's final days. With their assistance, my husband was allowed the dignity of remaining at home and passing away peacefully. I would like to especially thank the clinical manager Melissa; nurses Todd, Gabby and Ashley; social worker Linda; chaplain Debbie; and hospice aides Barb and Ashley.

Reader supports Burns for State Supreme Court
To the Editor:

For far too long we have had a Wisconsin Supreme Court that has allowed the erosion of the basic principles of democracy.

Reader disturbed by poll question
To the Editor:

I find it disturbing at such a divisive time in our country that the Northwoods River News decided to do an online reader poll like this! A poll question with this negative connotation: "Which traditional rival of a Wisconsin sports team do you dislike the most?"

Reader would like to see Greyhound Bus return
To the Editor:

I just can't figure this out. Ever since the Senior Center quit operating bus rides and rides that have volunteers, there is no longer a way for many people that don't drive on, those on disability or seniors to get to Wausau and south.

Reader supports Screnock for State Supreme Court
To the Editor:

Did you know that there is a statewide Spring Primary vote for the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday, Feb. 20? If you were unaware of this vote, you are not alone. Spring elections receive very little publicity. Historically, the spring elections have had dismal voter turnout. Let's change the tide and have every registered voter (you may register the same day as the election) cast their vote.

Reader urges RPPA to disband political action committee
To the Editor:

Lo those many years ago when I first became a public employee, I still remember one of the first things I was told, "even though we are not covered by the Hatch Act, we abide by it. We are here to serve the needs of the public, not to gain nor develop political favors. We do not make public policy, we implement it. At the most, we might be asked to serve as experts in our fields to provide information to the policy makers." Henry Hendrickson's advice and counsel has served me well, and while I voted in every election, I did not become politically active until I was no longer a public employee.

Martini issues a challenge
To the Editor:

It's always a pleasure to be on the opposite side of any environmental position taken by your newspapers. Your editorial board has been on the wrong side of most environmental issues over the past few decades. Often you are at odds with what's best for our lake-based economy and the people who flock to our area to enjoy out aquatic treasures. It's likely these editorials will continue along with the many errors they contain (for example your assertion that only 2 percent of the area is developed when many lakeshores like Crescent, Minocqua, and Pelican are 70 to 90 percent developed). Therefore, I challenge you to commit to an act of journalism and print both sides of the issue.

Reader sounds off on Newbold ATV issue
To the Editor:

I just read the latest iteration of the ongoing debate about ATV routes in Newbold and I'm confused. Why does this have to be so complicated and difficult?

Reader shares thoughts on mining and water
To the Editor:

I remember back in the early 1980s when Exxon was proposing a mine southwest of Crandon near Mole Lake and there was a huge promotional campaign going on.

Wisconsin wetland protection is under discussion
To the Editor:

Currently, the state legislature is discussing two bills, AB457 and SB600, both of which would remove restrictions on wetland protection in Wisconsin. These bills would exempt nonfederal wetlands from permitting requirements.

Generosity and gratitude
To the Editor:

Generosity is defined as, "the quality of being kind and generous; or the quality or fact of being plentiful or large."

To the Editor:

I was pleased to read in the Northwoods River News (Dec. 28) about Bob Martini's call for Oneida County to protect our endangered wetlands by placing them under general zoning.

Trump, you're fired
To the Editor:

I am shocked at Trump's latest tweet referring to the location of the nuclear activativation button and its size in response to North Korea's leader.
