Candidate will let coin flip stand
To the editor:

My name is Jeffrey Vollmer and I recently ran to be the Oneida County 19th District Board of Supervisor. The night of the election I was ahead in the vote count 306 to 305. A week later, after a new vote was tallied during the recount, I lost the race on a flip of the coin. The Government Accountability Board had given me until Wednesday, April 20, to appeal that recount in the Circuit Court.

Take a walk downtown
To the editor:

Rhinelander is a good place to live. We have good schools, health facilities, police and fire protection, shopping and good roads. Well, we are working on the roads. But the best part of our area is the people. They are kind, helpful and generous. They support our local charities and if someone is down on their luck because of poor health, or a fire etc. friends hold a benefit to help them.

Reader is tired of government overspending
To the editor:

Adjusted for inflation, federal taxes have risen five times as much as they were in 1960. In 1960, 50 percent of federal spending was for defense and 50 percent for everything else. Today we spend 16 percent on defense and 84 percent for everything else. If a Democrat were elected we would spend even more for everything else.

Voters deserve more respect
To the editor:

This letter is in response to the humiliation voters are subjected to under the current Wisconsin voting laws. After deciding to exercise our voting rights, we are herded into lines at polling places like cattle to the vaccination stanchion. Some of us end up standing in line for several hours. When we get to the head of the line, we proudly state our name and address.

The destruction of local control
To the editor:

In Wisconsin today we are seeing an unprecedented level of extreme catering to big money special interests. It would be bad enough if this was merely being perpetrated on the taxpayer's dime. The cost to the people of our state, our water resources, and society as we know it, is much greater.

Mayor thanks city residents
To the editor:

My sincere thanks goes to those within the community who stood solidly behind the PRAT tax referendum passed on April 5. There still is much work to do before implementation, but be assured that we will now go forward with confidence knowing of city residents' overwhelming support. Many thanks!

Reader claims the GOP doesn't want certain people to vote
To the editor:

The assault on Wisconsin just keeps rolling. Gov. Walker, not satisfied with disenfranchising thousands of voters with his fraudulent Voter ID law, has now made it illegal for municipal clerk assistants to register voters in the community. This is a practice that has been in place for 40 years.

How surprising is Bernie?
To the editor:

Sen. Bernie Sanders has done me and many of my friends a favor! He threw his hat in the ring of the Democratic primary while running around the country as he's been doing, as a socialist, and has proven for all Americans to see that the support for something other than the current exchange of Republicans has now captured millions of Americans.

School district's tradition of excellence continues
It was my distinct pleasure to accompany 17 RHS students as well as RHS teachers Linda Goldsworthy, Sara Stieve and Matt Knott on a nine-day trip to Italy during spring break.

Alderman urges 'Yes' vote on PRAT
Everyone that drives in Rhinelander knows about potholes. You hate them, I hate them, our cars hate them. City residents can help by voting "Yes" on April 5th for a 1/2 percent city sales tax on items the state deems "tourist-related" (as our Eagle River neighbors did in 2006), and putting it towards transportation infrastructure.

Local fisherman has advice for the DNR
A few days ago I got my fishing license for 2016-2017. I am looking at it now not believing what I received. A few years ago they came out with a new deal that when you received it, it was waterproof, folded up nice, and fit in your wallet. This was good, but not enough for the DNR.

Sanders will help the people reclaim their goverment
To the editor:

It is no wonder that people are dismayed by the political process and don't vote. For decades corporations have been financing and selecting candidates (both Democratic and Republican) effectively rigging it so that it doesn't matter who we vote for because either way the 1 percent wins.

Trump will restore greatness
To the editor:

We the people are fed up with the lies and deceit of the greedy politicians who think more of themselves than the people they represent. They are a group of self-righteous individuals who capitalize on every opportunity to benefit themselves. Our voice is being heard loud and clear.

An open letter from a Hoosier to a Badger
To the editor:

A few days ago I was planning to start this letter with "good luck in our Elite Eight matchup!" or "congratulations on beating us!" or "don't hate me just because we won!"

But then Notre Dame and North Carolina happened.

Trump supports veterans

To the editor: I am writing to all the Veteran Associations and your readers in hopes to aspire an awareness of the disastrous treatment of veterans from the VA and the impact of the upcoming primary elections.

The Phoenix VA hospital continues to be a serious veteran problem again in the national spotlight.

Kasich is the sensible choice
To the editor:

I would like to recommend as presidential candidate Governor John Kasich of Ohio, who is moderate, fiscally responsible, knowledgeable about the Defense Department, and compassionate.

As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives before he was elected governor, he served as chairperson of the House Budget Committee and succeeded in balancing the federal budget. He has vowed that, as president, balancing the budget will be his priority.

Readers recommend Pederson for county board
To the editor:

Oneida County Board Supervisor elections are being held on April 5th. We are writing to encourage the voters of District 5 (includes part of Rhinelander and Pelican) to re-elect Carol Pederson.

Carol has six years of experience serving on county board, including the recognition of being elected by the board as the 2nd Vice Board Chair.

The silent majority has awakened
To the editor:

The U.S. had a struggle to loosen the bonds of government 240 years ago. We have, once again, a new and growing silent majority taking root. They recognize that the word conservatism has been hijacked.

It no longer represents the wishes of the people.

Reader questions resort area tax
To the editor:

In order to charge a Premier Resort Area Tax, shouldn't that area look and feel like a Premier Resort Area?

Reader wants others to slow down
Why are so many drivers in a hurry? Couldn't they just leave a little earlier if they have a deadline? They are not just risking their own lives but a lot of others also.
