Reader assails Swearingen on drinking age proposal
To the Editor:

Rep. Rob Swearingen's "co"-proposal to lower the drinking age to 19 is so irresponsible and self-serving that I can't believe he had the audacity to submit it!

Reader concerned about pension
To the Editor:

Imagine working your whole life working for an employer that offers a pension. You spend years contributing to that pension and planning for your retirement.

Reader concerned about future of coral reefs
To the Editor:

Coral reefs in our oceans seem far from our Northwoods. In as short as 20 years, those coral beds will be dead. They are dying from warming ocean temperatures faster than expected.

Reader has tax reform idea
To the Editor:

Now that the idea of tax reform has been dropped, we're seeing a big push to squander a trillion dollars in cutting taxes for the wealthy, even though the government can't afford to do the things it should be doing for ordinary people.

DRI addresses misconceptions
It appears that some City Council members are a bit misinformed regarding the organization of DRI (Downtown Rhinelander Inc.) and the city parking lots. This letter is in reference to an article in the Thursday, Oct. 12 edition of the Northwoods River News "Future of downtown parking lots uncertain."

Reader outraged by proposed hunting bill
To the Editor: The Wisconsin Assembly will introduce a bill on Nov. 2 - this Thursday - that would allow anyone of any age to hunt.

Reader supports mining bill
To the Editor:

Mining has a long, proud tradition in Wisconsin. Some say that the state mascot, the Badger, was deemed so as many Wisconsinites at the time were miners who lived in caves like badgers - near the mines' working faces.

Reader: Walker following Trump's lead to ruin
To the Editor:

Our president never misses a chance to say something negative about people who aren't white. Scott Walker seems intent on joining him - although he's more subtle about it.

Reader sounds off on wolf 'fear-mongering'
To the Editor: It looks like the anti-wolf crowd was out in force at the latest meeting of our Natural Resources Board, spouting the same tired misinformation and fear-mongering they usually do about the effect wolves have on our deer population (NRB hears wolf woes from the Northwoods, Oct. 7).

'Head for the door'
To the Editor:

Do you know anyone who is working, or has worked, at a job they didn't like because their medical benefits were tied to their job?

LWVNOW director calls for local non-partisan candidates
To the Editor:

Ever thought of serving on a school board or in local government - town or city or at the county level? The spring election for these levels of public office will take place April 3, 2018 with a spring primary, if needed, on Feb. 20, 2018.

Decoding 'double-speak'
To the Editor: "Double-speak" is using words as if they mean the opposite of their true meaning. Your Sept. 28 issue was so filled with it that I feel compelled to comment.

Get money out of politics
To the Editor: A year and one month before an election the attack ads begin. Supposedly, Tammy Baldwin is against tax reform. The ad almost appears sane when one pays no attention or does not think critically when watching it.

It could be you
To the Editor: Your son and daughter went to Hodag Country Festival to listen to some great music and have fun. When the police appeared at your door, you figured they'd been picked up for DUI or maybe had been in an accident.

Reader shares thoughts on athletes and the national anthem
To the Editor:

I can still remember lacing up my cleats and running out on the field. I can still hear the sound the dirt made when I would make a sharp right turn and the way the cold spring air felt on my face as I was dribbling up the sidelines.

Graham-Cassidy targets Americans with pre-existing conditions
To the Editor:

As I write this article, Republicans are one vote away from passage of Graham-Cassidy, legislation which would rescind the Affordable Care Act. By the time you read this article, you will know whether they succeeded in putting health care out of the reach of millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Pastor offers suggestion to those donating to disaster relief efforts

Reader: Republicans embrace socialism in Foxconn deal

When is a debate not a debate?
To the Editor:

When is a debate not a debate? This apparent paradox is particularly relevant to discussions of climate change. E.P.A. Administrator Scott Pruitt, for instance, is planning a "debate" about the science of global warming.

Reader shares thoughts on jury duty
To the Editor:

I'd like to respond to the "Jurors serve justice and justice serves us all" letter to the editor.

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Reader: McCabe has something better to offer Wisconsin
To the Editor:

As a sportsman and patriot, I support the Second Amendment and responsibly exercise my right.
