Think twice before throwing trash out the car window

To the editor:

People in our neighborhood have taken it upon themselves to pick up trash along about a mile stretch of Highway 47. We have been doing this twice a year for about five or six years.

I am amazed at how much trash is tossed out of the windows of vehicles onto our highways. We collect about 20 large garbage bags full each time on average.

Much of this trash is food and drink containers from fast food places, beer and pop cans, plastic bottles and empty cigarette packs. I can't understand why people can't take this trash home and dispose of it properly. Can you imagine how much trash our highways accumulate when we can collect around 40 bags full each year on only one mile of highway?

All this garbage has to be picked up by caring citizens and the elderly. I say elderly because the people in our small groups range in age from the mid-60s to the mid-80s. This is hard work, especially for people our age. It is so depressing to see fresh trash on the roadway on the day following all our efforts.

I don't know how to stop this littering other than to bring this problem to the attention of the public and ask those responsible to think twice before tossing their trash out the window for others to pick up.

Just the other day, I was talking on the telephone in a parking lot when a cream colored PT cruiser made a U-turn by the hospital and threw a large empty can of beer out the passenger's window. I was shocked. Even told the lady I was talking with. I finished the phone call and out of the hospital parking lot he came with an elderly person next to him. He took off. Wow.

One out of five people litter or 17 percent choose to litter. 83 percent choose to dispose of their waste properly. The majority of littering is done by people who are less than 30 years old, whether flicked, dropped or tossed. Visual appearance of litter incites littering behavior. Education and strong parental role models deter littering. "Don't do as I do, do as I say" doesn't hold water. An example of consistency without compromise of doing right holds strong.

Thank you for this letter. And thank you for your time and efforts to keep the roadsides clean.

We believe in minimal impact in the Northwoods and think it's tragic that anyone has to spend time picking up trash along roads let alone 20 bags a mile. We find the same along county highways in Vilas and pick it up when equipped to do so.

Thank you for your letter. I live in Pine Lake and have noticed lots of trash lately, especially on Trails End Road. Pure laziness. What's so hard about taking it home and putting in the trash?

Take your trash home. Please don't litter our beautiful Northwoods. Don't need to look like a dump here. What's it take to put it in a garbage can? Just pure laziness or you don't care.
