Reader: Tiffany is ducking his constituents

To the editor:

State Senator Tom Tiffany appears to be afraid of his constituents. Go to his legislative website at and you will see that there is no easy way to contact him. Many other state senators and representatives have a "contact" tab at the top of the page. Not Tiffany - perhaps because he knows he doesn't do much to represent the people who voted for him, at least when it comes to protecting our air and water. Instead, Tiffany represents the interests of campaign contributers like mining companies that would foul our air and water to increase their profits. Tiffany also tries to inflict his unscientific and corporate-friendly views on the state in other ways - for example, by trying to keep the Department of Natural Resources from doing its job of protecting our environment. At his town hall meeting at Nicolet College last month, he was met with overwhelming concern from voters about his environmental record. So I understand why he might be afraid to let voters contact him. But that still doesn't justify it.

Sen. Tiffany is not concerned with the voters in his district. His recent support for legislation stripping local government zoning power for shore line zoning is a great example of that. When the governor floated the idea of stripping the state funding for highway projects north of Hwy 10 a year or so ago, 50 plus legislators of both parties in Northern WI signed a letter strongly opposed and the proposal was dropped. Sen. Tiffany was one of the very few legislators from northern WI who did not sign.
He knows that no matter what, the voters in his district will vote in a Republican. We need someone to run as an Independent, who will actually represent the people of this district.

Alan I couldn't agree with you more. But I have given up. Prior to this last election this paper was filled with anti Tiffany awareness from all over. I assumed that the public was well educated and would do whats right but I was wrong. They put him back into office. I want to remain calm here and not be irritated because I feel like common sense does not prevail. I can only hope that he does a lesser amount of damage in his self motivated irratiional and unpopular accomplishments. Your right he does not represent the people People have to step back so they are not blinded by the splatter of the manure spreader. .

Good points Alan. Tiffany at that meeting also stated the roads in Wisconsin are not in bad condition. I'm not kidding. Boy he must not drive around Rhinelander.
