Reader shares thoughts on parking lot issue

To the Editor:

I was just reading about the Rhinelander Common Council meeting's discussion about turning the Lindey/Kabel lot on the west side of Stevens Street into city parking.

Good grief, I do think some members of council are opposed to encouraging any downtown activity. Having a parking lot on the west side of Stevens Street would allow easy access to businesses along that side of Stevens Street, Davenport Street and Brown Street. If I recall, when downtown parking was redone a couple of years ago some parking spaces were lost due to changing the configuration. It seems to me that allowing the Lindey/Kabel property to fill that void is reasonable.

There are times when downtown parking is at a premium. Let's not discourage folks visiting downtown Rhinelander because some members of Common Council are concerned that the mayor's wife has opened a business. Instead of being obstructive they should be thrilled that an empty storefront is now in use to encourage more people to come to Rhinelander. Our downtown businesses need our support and every advantage to make it easy for people to visit their stores. Please, let's get the parking lot done. Thank you.

I love the authors’ use of New York Times-like anonymous sources: “(unknown) alderpersons began questioning whether the mayor might have a conflict of interest....” Why not just say alderpersons (sic) Kirby and Rog and be done with it?
