Reader believes downtown sidewalks are too cluttered

To the Editor:

I recently walked downtown and was surprised that the downtown Brown Street sidewalk was cluttered with clothing racks, bulletin boards, tables, chairs and flower planters.

I seem to remember from the original design that the additional space sidewalk extension was intended to harbor such items. The main sidewalk was designed for free flow pedestrian walking. Now pedestrians and shoppers have to stop to let oncoming pedestrians circle these obstacles before resuming their walk and the extension is not used. I can't imagine what it is like for someone who's confined to a wheelchair or deliveries made with pushcarts. I talked to a business owner who said that all those cluttered items have to be under a roof or canopy by city regulations. Common sense rules the main sidewalks have to be clear for emergency personnel to run gurneys to give aid to patient support and removal. With recent reporting of high numbers of casualties in the news, adhering to pedestrian safety is a priority. Right now our downtown is conducive to adolescent hurdlers. If a public building is constructed for handicapped mobility and support you don't go back and remove all the changes because someone thought differently.

I believe the residents voted to accepted the down town plan and intended use and purpose. Do to the present contradictory changes Why did we did we waste the extra cost to taxpayers for all that concrete and labor to add the sidewalk extensions which shortened street width?
Who is responsible for this existing dilemma?

Food for thought
