Fixing local government: Is it impossible?

To the Editor:

"It always seems impossible until it's done." - Nelson Mandela

In the midst of ongoing chaos at City Hall, I'd like to acknowledge the tremendous outpouring of support for my role in trying to move our city forward, while also taking on the much more difficult (and for now seemingly impossible) job of trying to keep our government within the law. While there are fellow council members that disagree with my objectives - which is fine - I write today to confirm I have been overwhelmed by expressions of gratitude from the backbone of our community: everyday citizens.

In the past month, I have received countless phone calls and emails offering strong support. Neighbors have stopped by the house to chat and offer thanks (and goodies!). At my place of work, as many as 10 customers a day will go out of their way to offer their sincere appreciation. And when I go out shopping in town, it's so nice as people I don't even know (fellow shoppers, cashiers, etc.) introduce themselves and are clearly so pleased to offer their encouragement.

Unlike some others, I don't use social media much, if at all, which works fine for my constituency and has for decades. Sure, people tell me about these new "keyboard warrior" haters out there in their own echo chamber, but I don't read or listen to them or know who those people even are. I write this to the overwhelming number of you (150 to 0, literally) who have been so kind and supporting of my efforts at City Hall with your in-person kindness. I am also confident that if I ran again for my position on council, I would win hands down, as I have in every campaign I have ever run since 1998.

Have I made some mistakes in my performance? Of course I have. Do I regret them? Of course. Yet after 21 years of service, I have never seen such a corrupt and lawless operation of government at any level as I have seen since the new administration came along. I've tried to stop server and records tampering and failed, but thankfully law enforcement is on it now. It's extremely hard to sit and watch our City being dragged down without speaking out, sometimes even out-of-order.

The task of rebuilding our community must begin with a rebuilding of our government to one that is based on the rules and laws that we need to rediscover and follow. At this moment in time, that seems like an impossible task. But as Amelia Earhart said: "Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others."

Thank you all and Happy Thanksgiving,

Dawn Rog

I'll second that motion Jeremy. Beware of wolves dressed in sheep's clothing. The sale is to thick for me to buy.

But it's ok to get into a verbal and physical altercation with a sub contractor to the city. If there was anything illegal suspected law enforcement should have been called. Accusing the mayor of a physical confrontation when in fact you were the aggressor. Then went on Facebook to cry wolf. Third you blurt out an unbecoming comment to a local citizen in open session of a council meeting when you supposedly were posting on Facebook during a council meeting. But then again you say you don't use social media. When confronted with issuing an apology you sat smug and quietly. It's hard to believe that you have that much love and support when you act like a childish bully most of the time.
