Our View

Wisconsin's tradition of government transparency rests on the state's open records and open meetings laws. (subscriber access)

Our View
The Democratic Party has not functioned as a serious policy organization for a long time now, and this week's political stunt - otherwise known as Tony Evers' special session to address gun violence - only proves the point. (subscriber access)

Our View
As Oneida County gets ready to take up its 2020 draft budget next month, it's clear that most Oneida County supervisors, with a few notable exceptions such as supervisor Billy Fried, are just content to ignore all the fiscal red flags around them. (subscriber access)

Our View
Perhaps it was the exception that proves the rule, but this past week the Oneida County Board of Supervisors made a wise decision - for once - when it rejected an outright prohibition on mining on county-owned lands. (subscriber access)

Evers can do better on openness
Early in his administration, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers was asked to produce a letter he'd gotten from departing Gov. Scott Walker, during the transition. He initially refused, claiming it was a "purely personal" communication outside of the reach of the state's open records law.

Our view
Several weeks ago, we reported on new initiatives planned by Democrats to, well, confiscate every law-abiding citizens' guns, or at least every gun they can get their hands on. (subscriber access)

When it comes to brain injuries, it is said that the accumulation of small hits to the head are actually more damaging than concussions in causing neurodegenerative disease, and the same might be said of political and economic injury, that the accumulation of small slights can be more devastating to a region's prosperity than one major political assault. Reader sounds off on wolf 'fear-mongering'
To the Editor: It looks like the anti-wolf crowd was out in force at the latest meeting of our Natural Resources Board, spouting the same tired misinformation and fear-mongering they usually do about the effect wolves have on our deer population (NRB hears wolf woes from the Northwoods, Oct. 7).

Gunfight at the Not OK Corral
There's trouble brewing at the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, and, if what we hear on the street turns out to be true, next year's sheriff's election might take the brew to an outright boil.

Health care, tax reform: It's now or never
Republicans can argue about immigration and dreamers, they can argue about defense spending and Russia, they can argue about trade and marijuana (yes, they are fighting over that), but there are two issues they had better stop squabbling about and pass: a health care overhaul and tax reform.
