Seriously, abolish the Department of Education
It's an old rallying cry on the right - Abolish the Department of Education!

Mostly it's been depicted as a crop grown far from the mainstream in the fields of far-right crackpots, at least that's how the government-approved media see it. They conveniently fail to mention that Ronald Reagan campaigned on the idea and was elected president - twice.

A dishonest-to-goodness good-old-boy cover-up
The revelation that the Oneida County Sheriff's Department was less than honest in its attempt to protect the reputation and career of former deputy Lee Lech, whom a co-worker has accused of rape, is profoundly disturbing, and should not go unpunished by the county.

Let's be clear: The sheriff's department lied in its legal briefs about its reasons for wanting to keep the allegations against Lech sealed.

Say hello to Gov. Barack Obama
It might be a shock to many that the governor of Wisconsin is also the president of the United States: Barack Obama.

He's not officially governor - Scott Walker has that title - but every day the Obama administration not only exerts its will and way upon Wisconsinites but uses state agencies, and state officials and tax dollars, to do it.

Rhinelander Roots organizers thank participants
To the editor:

A big thank you to all who helped make the first Rhinelander Roots Celebration on May 12 at Rhinelander City Hall a success.

We had 20 exhibitors who brought in a wide range of photographs, scrapbooks, antiques and memorabilia, and a good crowd the entire day of the event.

Elected officials are endangering our lakes, rivers, streams
To the editor:

Having spent 30 years as a water plant operator and distribution specialist with Menasha Utilities, I have been working with what I call "blue gold" most of my life. When I bought property and retired in Townsend, I became very active in the Flowage Association. I currently serve as a board member of the Oconto County Lakes and Waterways Association.

Reader bemoans condition of local roads
To the editor:

The roads in Rhinelander are getting worse by the day. I can only imagine people are going to start avoiding town all together as they pass from the north or south. Obviously, this is not good for business.

The Nurse Ratched election
The 2016 presidential election just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser, as they say, and we're not talking about the Republicans.

Oh sure, the mainstream media keeps focusing its fire and fury on Donald Trump, as if they believe they can somehow sink him, though hundreds of millions of dollars in attack ads and millions more from the media's own in-kind bombing missions haven't been able to do so.

On transparency and executive overreach
It is an established if underreported fact that the Obama administration is one of the least open regimes in recent history, despite Obama's oft-repeated goal of being the most transparent president ever.

He may be transparent in his own mind, and in the minds of the media charlatans who give him transparency awards - yes, they really do - but at every turn he has tried to thwart openness. He has slowed down responses to open-records requests dramatically, turned on whistleblowers, and, when confronted with requests, the administration often says it can't find any records, only to find thousands of them if they are sued.

Re-elect Sen. Johnson
To the editor:

The election of U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson has been a wonderful gift to the people of Wisconsin. Johnson has been endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Business. The NFIB said they endorsed Johnson because he protects the rights of small business in Wisconsin.

Tiffany's policies have hurt the Northwoods
To the editor:

Senator Tiffany makes himself look pretty good in his recent article. I should be used to the GOP spinning the things they do to make them sound good. I'm not. It is just that much more fertilizer.

Tiffany sold us all out as one of his very first acts as senator. After receiving $90,000 from Gogebic Taconite and its officers, he took legislation written by their lawyers and submitted it as his own.

Obama's war against Main Street
It's not particularly news that President Barack Obama has little love for Main Street.

By Main Street, we mean the small businesses that provide the economic lifeblood in smaller communities outside major urban centers, as well as the cultural and social institutions that grow up in these little havens of America.

Taken together, a surprisingly large number of Americans still call Main Street home.

Let us shine
To the editor:

Downtown Rhinelander's landscape will be changing fast in the coming months. I see it as a wonderful opportunity for growth for the downtown merchants if they gear up for it.

I would hope that there would be a renewed effort to attract more tourists. In my opinion we have been falling far short of our potential over the years, really. We should be doing much better, but instead we struggle.

Things don't go better with Koch
One thing about Donald Trump, whether you love him or hate him, he has certainly exposed the true politics of those populating the leadership of the Republican Party, and for that reason the Republican Party will never ever be the same, if it survives at all.

For many years, the "conservative" pundit class and activist leaders such as Erick Erickson at RedState prided themselves on their roles as messengers for the conservative movement in America. They routinely condemned the big, bad Establishment.

De Niro asks the questions that need to be asked
Ask serious scientists and doctors these days about the causes of autism, and most of them will tell you it's caused by a genetic predisposition likely coupled with an environmental trigger.

That's the easy part. Then the questions begin.

How strong are those environmental triggers compared to the genetics? And just what are the environmental triggers? The answers vary by a wide philosophical mile.

Candidate will let coin flip stand
To the editor:

My name is Jeffrey Vollmer and I recently ran to be the Oneida County 19th District Board of Supervisor. The night of the election I was ahead in the vote count 306 to 305. A week later, after a new vote was tallied during the recount, I lost the race on a flip of the coin. The Government Accountability Board had given me until Wednesday, April 20, to appeal that recount in the Circuit Court.

Take a walk downtown
To the editor:

Rhinelander is a good place to live. We have good schools, health facilities, police and fire protection, shopping and good roads. Well, we are working on the roads. But the best part of our area is the people. They are kind, helpful and generous. They support our local charities and if someone is down on their luck because of poor health, or a fire etc. friends hold a benefit to help them.

Reader is tired of government overspending
To the editor:

Adjusted for inflation, federal taxes have risen five times as much as they were in 1960. In 1960, 50 percent of federal spending was for defense and 50 percent for everything else. Today we spend 16 percent on defense and 84 percent for everything else. If a Democrat were elected we would spend even more for everything else.

Voters deserve more respect
To the editor:

This letter is in response to the humiliation voters are subjected to under the current Wisconsin voting laws. After deciding to exercise our voting rights, we are herded into lines at polling places like cattle to the vaccination stanchion. Some of us end up standing in line for several hours. When we get to the head of the line, we proudly state our name and address.

The destruction of local control
To the editor:

In Wisconsin today we are seeing an unprecedented level of extreme catering to big money special interests. It would be bad enough if this was merely being perpetrated on the taxpayer's dime. The cost to the people of our state, our water resources, and society as we know it, is much greater.

President Obama, President Bush: We owe you a very big thank you
It's not often we give a big thanks to President Barack Obama or former President George W. Bush, but this week we feel we have to give credit where credit is due.

That's because the hallmark of both administrations is and was massive, naked political corruption. With Bush, it was shameless giveaways to big-business cronies and other special interests; with Obama, it's an ideological depravity of the worst sort, a disdain for American values and constitutional principles.
