Crude oil ban is absurd
To the editor:

One of our nation's most outdated and absurd energy policies is the ban on crude oil exports we have had in place since the energy crisis of the 1970s. But there is no longer an energy crisis. In fact, America is now the world's leading producer of oil and natural gas. Luckily Congressman Sean Duffy gets this outdated law makes no sense in 2015, so he has joined a bi-partisan group of over 100 members of Congress in co-sponsoring common sense legislation to overturn the ban.

Our View: A wolf in moose clothing
As we report today, the spectacle of environmental organizations using wildlife as pawns on their political chessboards is continuing, and it is a sad sight to see.

It's time for Tiffany to go
To the editor:

It is amazing and more than a little perplexing at how far Sen. Tom Tiffany has strayed from the basic core principles of modern Republicanism. In particular, his political behavior has been a steady violation of the strongest plank of the party for the past half century: the need for "law and order" in America. He has replaced civic laws and regulations with a primacy of individualism to the extreme. He has come to stand for nothing more or less than deep pockets anarchism.

Our View- gas prices
Ok, let's see, crude oil is at a six-year low, but retail gas prices in Wisconsin and elsewhere in the Midwest are rising.

City officials: Lincoln Street resurfacing project a success
To the Editor:

The city of Rhinelander recently completed a pave- ment resurfacing project on the five-lane section of Lincoln Street. This project replaced worn pavement sur- faces that clearly needed attention in one of the most traveled commercial areas in the city. The project now appears to be well received by the public and the city staff is simply proud of the project results. Although the city has completed many projects of this type, this proj- ect was successful in how the public supported the project and how the project ran from start to finish. The city of Rhinelander extends its thanks not only to those who planned, prepared and com- pleted this work, but to the public that waited for this patiently and promoted a good project be completed.

Our View: A shoreland standard is a shoreland standard, by any other name
All in all, we simply don't understand the apparent confusion among local officials and zoning staff around the state, including in Oneida County, concerning the state's newly enacted shoreland zoning law.

In defense of conservative values
Last week an area paper published a letter to the editor that called me out by name. It was about Scott Walker and was long on rhetoric and in my opinion lacked any substance.

Tax code reform is imperative
Our nation's businesses are saddled with the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world and hampered by a tax code that is so complex it takes a team of tax attorneys to translate it.
Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Fix the tax code
Our tax system has been set up to reward those that can afford a team of lawyers and has been stacked against those that cannot.

High court bought and paid for
The recent State Supreme Court decision to let Gov. Scott Walker off the hook was not unexpected.

Our View: On rogue public officials, again
There is in Wisconsin a titanic struggle going on between the media - both liberal and conservative - and a network of rogue public officials determined to end government transparency.

Our View: A solid step forward
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources this week announced a significant reorganization, and, while we are not often effusive about actions over at the natural resources bunker, this time we believe the agency's leadership deserves credit for a solid move against the bureaucrats embedded deep in the machinery.

Tiffany's unseemly pattern continues
To the editor:

It is so ironic to read the recent editorial, "The Wisconsin Republican Party: Corruption, cronyism, and sleaze" regarding the efforts of the Republican Party to gut Wisconsin's open records law.

Our view: County should stop enforcing illegal zoning ordinance
The ink was barely dry on the budget bill signed by Gov. Scott Walker before the bureaucrats, both on the state and local levels, were busy trying to figure out ways to undermine the shoreland provisions within it.

Having their cake and eating it too
After watching Democrats, such as Sen. Janet Bewley, whine and nitpick through the whole Wisconsin budget process I have to remind everyone of their hypocrisy.

Saturday, July 18, 2015

Our View: The referendum must stand
If the resolution that will be presented to the Oneida County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passes as it stands, it will represent a sensible step forward for a highway department plan that has all too often seemed to be on a fast track for approval.

Property tax payments due Property tax payments due
The second installment of the 2014 Oneida County property tax bills is due by July 31, 2015. Due to limited parking and long waiting lines, mailing tax payments is recommended.

TPP is a disgrace
Well, the government did it again. I know the next election I will not be voting Republican or Democrat because of what they did to us.

Tiffany: 'I apologize'
I made a mistake and I apologize.
On Thursday, July 2 I voted for the budget wrap-up motion to complete the Joint Finance Committee's work.
