Susan Evelyn Skubal

Susan Evelyn Skubal, age 71 of Rhinelander, died Monday night, July 16, 2018 in hospice at her home with just her loving husband at her side.

Susan was born in Wausau June 20, 1947, the daughter of Russell D. and Elaine I. E. (Lambrecht) Walters. She grew up in Wausau and graduated from Wausau High School in 1965.

Susan met the love of her life, Mike Skubal, at a dance at the Rothschild Pavilion in the summer of 1965, he just didn't know it at the time. She wore a white dress. They dated once and ended the evening sitting on her front porch steps, talking.

He went on to marry another. It was short lived. In 1969 Mike caught a ride back from San Francisco to visit his mom in Madison. The fellow that gave him a lift became a friend and a few weeks later showed up with tickets to a Blind Faith concert in Milwaukee and a blind date as well. He brought the girls to the house and the first question the young woman asked was, "You lived in Wausau for a time, you didn't know Mike Skubal, did you?"

Mike replied, "I'm him."

I am that Mike Skubal and from that moment we spent the next 49 years together.

We lived in Coos Bay, Ore., Seattle, Denver, and St. Paul, before moving back to Mike's hometown, Rhinelander in 2003. Sue grew up visiting her grandparent's cottage on Lake Nokomis and loved the area.

In Seattle and St. Paul, Susan was an executive, a marine underwriter for St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company. She insured "blue water" hulls, ocean-going cargo, and the crab fleet made famous in the television show, "Deadliest Catch." While in Rhinelander Susan worked for Goodwill Industries. She retired in 2016. Sue and Mike ran the Logging Museum for six years.

Needlework, building doll houses, reading, listening to music and long rides in the old Saab were some of the things Sue enjoyed. A steak dinner and a couple of cocktails at Shady Sue's was a favorite night out.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Vance Chandler of Tucson, Ariz.

Sue is survived by her daughters, Vanessa Coldwater and her partner Riley Harrison, Vanessa's children Marley, Peregrine and Beck Stephens and Sunshine Coldwater of Minneapolis, and Sarah (Daryl) Raimann of Hartland, Minn., and her children Bethany, Torrie, Shanna and Carter Stencel. Also surviving is one sister, Catherine (Daniel) Brick of Columbus, Wisc., an aunt, Martha Walters of Weston, and cousins.

The visitation for Susan will be held Saturday, July 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hildebrand Funeral Home. A short memorial service will follow. Immediately following the service there will be a procession to Forest Home Cemetery for burial.

Susan has loved me unconditionally from the time she was eighteen. I have been so lucky. I love you forever, Mike.
