Charles R. O'Brien

Charles R. O'Brien, age 79, of Rhinelander, died Aug. 7, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 1, 1939. in Enterprise, to George and Hazel (Mills) O'Brien. Charlie grew up in Pelican Lake and then moved to Rhinelander when he was in high school, graduating in 1957 from RUHS. He married the former Joanne Duffy at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on Aug. 22, 1959. They enjoyed traveling and camping with their three children. Charlie also looked forward to hunting and fishing with family and friends. The last few years he was quite a cribbage player. He enjoyed life!

Charlie was president of the Local 15 of the United Paperworkers and worked as a machinist at the Rhinelander Paper Company. He retired as a supervisor in 1998. Keeping busy was important to him. Charlie loved to drive and he found the perfect part-time job, working in retirement as a driver for the GM and Toyoto Dealerships, for quite a few years.

Charlie was a longtime member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served on the Church Council and helped with many projects and programs throughout the years. His church and family meant everything to Charlie. He was a great, loving husband, father, grandfather and Ggpa (great-grandfather).

Charlie is survived by his wife Joanne, his daughters Cassandra "Cassie" Shefchik and Carrie (James) Sonsthagen, his son Charles (Kim) O'Brien II, his grandchildren Peggy, James, Kandra, Jonathon "JD", his five great-grandchildren, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Fran Shefchik, his two sisters Dola and Veda, and his three brothers Wayne, Jerry and George.

Memorial services for Charlie will be held on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018 at noon with visitation from 10 a.m., until the time of services, all at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reverend Tammy Barthels will officiate. You may leave your private condolences for the O'Brien family at The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving Charlie's family.
