Francis "Fran" Sand
Francis "Fran" Sand, age 85, a resident of Sugar Camp since 1995, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018. Fran was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Phillips, to Frank and Mary Sand. He graduated from Phillips High School, received his bachelor's degree from Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire. Fran earned his master's degree from Harvard. He was employed by Colfax, Mondovi and Franklin high schools for 37 years where he taught chemistry and physics. He attended further studies at UW Whitewater, Michigan Tech, Wayne State, UW Madison, and UW Superior. Fran worked as a radio DJ in Park Falls and Eau Claire. He also coached football, debate, drama and golf. He was also a scout for basketball and football. Fran married his wife, Pat, on Sept. 13, 1991 in Vilas Co. Fran enjoyed reading in his free time and he loved his retirement home in Sugar Camp. He sponsored an Adopt-A-Highway mile on highway D and frequently enjoyed walking it. Pat and Fran were also avid world travelers. Fran was a member of St. Kunegunda of Poland Catholic Church in Sugar Camp, where he served as a lector. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus. He was drafted into the Army and served at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Fran was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Mary; his sister: Betty; his brother-in-law: Leo Simones; nephew: Leo "Chip" Simones; and Pat's son, Christopher. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Pat Sand of Sugar Camp; children: Robert (Tina) Sand of Becker, Minn., Elizabeth (Michael) Nelson of Oregon, Wis. and Amy (Nate) Sand of Mascoutah, Ill.; grandchildren: Emily, Andrew and Kathryn Nelson, Olivia Schmidt and Anna Schmidt, Jessica Sand and Lauren Sand; brother James (Christa) Sand of Oak Ridge, Tenn., sister: Kathleen Simones of Phillips; and nephews: Jake Sand, Michael (Tabatha) Sand, Christopher (Kimberlee) Simones, Patrick (Melissa) Simones, Joseph (Laura) Simones, and Benjamin (Cristina) Simones. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 1, 2018 at St. Kunegunda Catholic Church of Poland in Sugar Camp. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials to Ascension Hospice are appreciated by the family.
