Joseph F. Kopp

Joseph F. Kopp, age 90 of Rhinelander, peacefully passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2018.  Joe was born on March 21, 1928 in Skokie, Illinois, to John and Rose (Freres) Kopp. He is survived by his sister, Barbara K. Bergman, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marge, his sister Dorothy Kopp, brothers John (Bud), Charlie and Richard Kopp.

Joe attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Rhinelander High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corp in Post-war Germany where he was a radio operator. After completing his military service in 1956, he attended radio broadcasting school both in Chicago and Minneapolis. Joe took this skill and moved West to South Dakota where he worked in radio, first in Rapid City, and finally, Belle Fourche, where, in 1959, he started KBFS AM 1450 radio station.

In 1972, he met and married the love of his life, Margorie Eloise McGregor. They remained in Belle Fourche, as Joe continued to grow his radio station business, until he retired in 1982, and later relocated back to Rhinelander.

As an avid golfer, Joe was a longtime member of the Rhinelander Country Club. He did volunteer work for the Red Cross Blood Mobile and was always eager to lend a helping hand. At Christmastime, he took great pleasure and pride in decorating his Spring Lake Road home with a colorful light display that became an attraction for local residents. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, playing cards, walking his dog and just being outdoors. Joe will be missed and most remembered for his sharp wit and playful sense of humor.

The visitation for Joe will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at the corner of Conro and King streets on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Mass. Fr. Kevin Farrell, Dn. Ron Bosi and Dn. Dick Meier will be officiating. Immediately following the Memorial Mass, there will be a procession to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery for the Committal Service and Military Honors. Military Honors will be conducted by the Ray Rousseau V.F.W. Post 3143, Rhinelander and two representatives from the United States Army.
