Edward "Mickey" McNown

Edward "Mickey" McNown, age 83, of the Village of Sherwood, formerly of Rhinelander, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at the Theda Care Medical Center in Neenah. He was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Tomahawk, to Harrison and Caroline (DeGroot) McNown. He graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1953. He married the former Carolyn Gentry and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage, 45 of them in Rhinelander and the last 17 in Sherwood. Mickey was employed by the Wisconsin DOT in the engineering department, retiring in 1990.

During his working years Mickey and his family enjoyed many activities together. He served as a Boy Scout leader and helped his son Scott achieve his Eagle Scout. What the McNowns were known for in Rhinelander was there devotion to dog sled racing. As a family they participated in dog sledding for over 17 years. They raced all over the north and throughout the 17-some years, they cared for and trained many sled dogs. Mickey also served as president of the Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club. Mickey and his wife also enjoyed traveling. They were fortunate to visit over 80 countries and all the continents, including Antarctica. He referred to the Antarctica trip as a beautiful "drive by". Mickey also was a past member of the First Congregational Church in Rhinelander and then the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sherwood.

Mickey is survived by his wife Carolyn, his daughters Cindy (Russell) McNown-Perry and Lori (Clayton) Hiland, his grandson Scott Willliams and granddaughters Kendra and Laura Seniow, his sisters Emily Edmund and Carolyn Cheslock, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his sons Richard and Scott and his parents.

Funeral services for Mickey are set for noon with visitation from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, all at the Carlson Funeral Home in Rhinelander. Pastor Topher Mehlhoff will be officiating. Interment will follow in The Union Grove Cemetery in Cassian. You may leave your private condolences for the McNown family at The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the McNown family.
