Norman "Blackie" L. Alsteens Sr.

Norman "Blackie" L. Alsteens Sr., 85 of the Town of Pine Lake, passed away at home on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

He was born in Rhinelander on Tuesday, April 17, 1934, the son of Alexander H. and Sylvia A. (Garrow) Alsteens. Norman attended school in Rhinelander.

He was employed at Red Dot Potato Farm working there until he entered the United States Navy. Norman proudly served his country during the Korean War. He married Nancy Collison in Rhinelander. The couple made their home in Rhinelander and had three children: Nick, Sylvia and Renee. They later divorced. He moved to Minnesota to work in the logging industry and this is where he met his future wife Mary in 1962 while living in Ely, Minn. The couple were united in marriage in Solon Springs in December of 1964. They had two children; Norman Jr. and Eric. The family moved to Rhinelander where Norman was employed as a planter with the Frito Lay Company.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards on the weekend and occasional cold beer.

Surviving are his children: Nick Alsteens of Minneapolis, Minn., Sylvia (Jim) Alsteens-Hammond of Hutchinson, Minn., Renee Alsteens of Knoxville, Tenn., Norman (Kim) Alsteens Jr. of Rhinelander and Eric (Heidi) Alsteens of Rhinelander; 12 grandchildren: Josh, Sonja, Melissa, Paula, Corey, Ashley, Brooke, Brett, Matthew, Chayce, Anna and Xander. Also surviving are great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Alsteens of Eagle River. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Lou Alsteens and by seven brothers and five sisters.

The graveside service for Norman will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Forest Home Cemetery, located at 650 Washington Avenue, Rhinelander.

Military honors will be conducted by the Ray Rousseau V.F.W. Post #3143 Rhinelander and by two representatives from the United States Navy.
