Alice Kniewel, 93, of West Allis, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019 with her loving family at her side, at Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee.
She was born in Milwaukee on Sunday, Oct. 4, 1925, the third of four children born to Matthew and Anna (Wisniewski) Pluta who were Polish immigrants.
Mom attended school in Milwaukee and was a 1943 graduate of South Division High School. After completing high school she attended Mt. Mary College where in 1947 she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She taught grade school in Hilbert and later at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange, Illinois.
Mom was united in marriage to Albert A. Kniewel at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Milwaukee on June 24, 1950. The newlyweds lived with mom's parents while dad attended Marquette University. Upon completion of dad's degree in engineering, the couple moved to West Allis. Mom stayed at home and took care of four children.
She was a member of St. Matthias Catholic Church, the Milwaukee Society of the Polish National Alliance, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. In her free time, mom enjoyed reading and investing in the stock market. She loved and enjoyed her family and took great pride in their accomplishments. Even though she never learned how to drive this did not stop her from giving directives. She loved road trips to visit family, vacations to Mayer's Longwood Lodge on Bill's Lake, All Seasons Resort on Little Crawling Stone Lake, and yearly trips to Isla Del Sol, in St. Petersburg, Florida and to Lake of the Torches Casino, where she would play the penny slot machines, one penny at a time. Mom loved to cook and enjoyed good food and Brandy Alexander's, especially from Hick's Landing in Fifield.
She will be dearly missed by her children, Barbara Vitense of Nashotah, Janice (David) Stark of Janesville, Ann (Stephen) Koch of Greenfield, and Thomas (Andrea) Kniewel of Rhinelander; nine grandchildren, Brian (Julie) Vitense of Oconomowoc, Jennifer (Kyle) Jacobs of Wauwatosa, Tim Vitense, of Anoka, Minn., Kyle (Heidi) Vitense of Eden Prairie, Minn., Allison (Jamin) Seippel of Janesville, Andrew (Alison) Stark of Plymouth, Minn., Nicholas Koch of Greenfield, Jamie Koch of Greenfield, and Alexander Kniewel of Rhinelander; nine great-grandchildren; Paeton and Landon Vitense, Preston and Olivia Jacobs, Serena and Erin Vitense, Channing, Chloe and Brady Seippel and two more great-grandchildren on the way. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert Kniewel on July 1, 1999; two sisters, Sophie (Dr. Carl) Thom, Stella (Dr. Frank) Wisniewski; brother and two sisters-in-law, Chester (Elaine) and (Carol) Pluta; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Alma) Kniewel, Lambert Kniewel; sisters-in-law, Emily (Milo) Smiley, Mildred (Mariano) Mancuso and a great-niece, Carlie Beaudin.
The visitation for our mom will take place on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heritage Funeral Home located at 6615 W. Oklahoma Avenue, Milwaukee. A second visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 at St. Matthias Catholic Church located at 9306 W Beloit Road, Milwaukee from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Eulogy at 10:15 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dave Cooper officiating.
Immediately following the mass, there will be a procession to St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum for the Committal Service.
