Robert Henry Maass

Robert Henry Maass, my husband of 50 years, died on Nov. 22, 2019. He was Rob to me, but Bob to those who knew him. Born to Katie and Henry Maass on Feb. 25, 1949, his childhood was spent in the Rhinelander area.

He graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1969 a champion swimming under the coaching of the infamous Bob Smith. He continued at Stevens Point State University, becoming a national swimming champion. Upon graduation he entered the road construction business, eventually becoming Oneida County Highway Commissioner.

Rob was one of the youngest commissioners at the age of 32. He served Oneida County with great diligence, respect and honesty for 25 years. Rob is survived by his wife, JoAnne, and children, Amy (Jason) Sheldon of Michigan; Jason (Penne) of Rhinelander and Cindy Jo Maass of Montana; his grandchildren, Trystan, Robert, Isabelle, Codey and Brady; and his step-grandchildren Robert John and Dustin Ryan. He was the best "Grumpy" grandpa to the kids.

He is further survived by his sister Betsy (Ormon) Brooks of Michigan and his brother, Patrick (Beth) Maass of Rhinelander. Rob is survived by his brothers-in-law Jeff (Dawn) Hess of Rhinelander and Bill (Tao) Hess of Alabama. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Rob loved to hunt and founded "Hank's Deer Camp". A great passion was scuba diving in the Caribbean. In retirement, he combined his love of the outdoors and the water by piloting Zastrow's "Wilderness Queen" on the Wisconsin River.

A Celebration of Life/Mass will be held Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at 12:30 p.m., with Mother Meredyth Albright officiating. The service will be held at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Inurnment will follow the service in Forest Home Cemetery. All are invited to then participate in a time of refreshment and reminiscing in the Guild Hall at St. Augustine. Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / is serving the family.

In lieu of flowers and other memorials, please contribute to the Veteran's Honor Flight ("Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, Inc." PO Box 867, Menomonee Falls, WI 53052) or any of your favorite charities or causes.

My beloved husband, "lived until he died," and he's "just fine."

Written by Rob's widow, JoAnne Hess Maass.

First of all Judy and I would like to express our condolences to the family. It's a difficult thing to say good bye to someone you have actually known most of your life. The memories of hunting with Hank Rob , Pat Mel and whole gang will be treasured . Judy knew him from the boat and was saddened by the news. God Speed Captain, glad to have shared the ride!
