Mary Louise Johnson

Mary Louise (Simpson) Johnson, 86, of, Rhinelander, passed away peacefully Feb. 17, 2020 while under hospice care. Born Nov. 1, 1933, in Phelps, Wisconsin to Cecil and Rose Simpson, Mary was preceded in death by husband Kenneth, son John, and sisters Charlotte Connor and Karen Libby.

Prior to her marriage to Ken Johnson in Rhinelander in 1961, Mary worked as an executive secretary at the Schlitz Brewing Company and at Warner Brothers Films in Milwaukee. She treasured her friends and experiences there, including singing on television with the Schlitz Show Choir and attending the Milwaukee Braves parade after their 1957 World Series championship.

Mary will be remembered by many as an early child care provider and teacher at the Rocking Horse, Carousel, and Nicolet College Day Care centers. She was known for sharing her love for music with children along with wisdom and guidance to young mothers. In her later years her giving spirit continued through homemade crocheting and knitting gifts of baby hats and booties, dishtowels, and dishrags to friends (and friends of friends). She was an avid fan of all sports, which she enjoyed playing growing up in Phelps. Mary warmed the bleachers over many years and tuned into the radio in her later years as a proud mother and grandmother of youth, high school, and college athletic contests (Hodag and otherwise).

Mary is survived by daughter Rita (Jim) of Buffalo City, daughter-in-law Carla of Bloomer, and sons Tom (Diane) of Birchwood and Paul (Amy) of Rhinelander, as well as grandchildren Mary, Lindsay, Randi, Markus, Arik, Payton, Jenna, Annika, Sidney, and Sophie and her Simpson siblings Rita Reeve, Bill Simpson, Joan Tuula, Sandy Rankinen, Jim Simpson, Dan Simpson, Cheryl Zastrow, and Steve Simpson, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. In her last years, she appreciated the loving care of friends Beth Marquardt and Judy Kranz.

A visitation in honor of Mary's life will be held at Carlson's Funeral Home of Rhinelander on Saturday, Feb. 22nd from 10 a.m. to noon. You may leave your private condolences for the Johnson family at The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the Johnson family.
