Shirley Bernsteen

Shirley Bernsteen, age 93, died March 16, 2020 at Rennes Health and Rehab in Rhinelander. Shirley was born in Taylors Falls, Minn. in 1926, and moved to Rhinelander shortly after with her mother and father. She was the oldest of 7 children. She attended high school in Rhinelander and was married to John Bernsteen during World War II in 1945.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, all of her siblings, and daughter Christy. Her son Mike lives in Hudson. She has four grandchildren.

She worked for nearly 40 years at Mel's Trading Post, now Mel's Sport Shop and, along with John, was an avid downhill snow skier. She ran the winter ski shop in Mel's for most of those 40 years and was known far and wide in the area for this. Her husband John was part of a small group who help found and start Camp 10 in Rhinelander in the 1950s. That group traveled to Aspen, Colo. in early 1957 to test their skills on the big mountain; some of the first to do so.

There will be no formal services at this time because of the virus limiting large gatherings. Her son Mike is planning a Celebration of Life at The Flyin Finn in Rhinelander in early June. Details will follow on date and time. You may leave your private condolences for Shirley's family at The Carlson Funeral Home (715)-369-1414 is handling the arrangements for Shirley's family.

Shirley was truly Ms Skiing in Rhinelander and a tremendous asset to the skiing community. The downhill ski shop at Mels was never quite the same after she retired. Hopefully she has joined John and they are getting in some good turns on the north side of big clouds.

Will always remember Shirley as the kind and caring person who fit me with my first pair of skis, she also was there for my second, third, fourth and even when I went to college. She was always happy and so enthusiastic about skiing.
