Gregg Donald Darton
Gregg Donald Darton, age 72, passed away after a lengthy illness on Jan. 1, 2021. He was born on June 7, 1948, in Phelps, to LaVerne (nee Fiedler) and Gordon Darton. Gregg graduated from Greenfield High School in Greenfield, in 1966 and he was a member of the diving team. In 1963, he met the love of his life, Christine (nee Wisniewski), and in April 2020, they celebrated 52 years of marriage.
Gregg enlisted in the US Marine Corp in 1967, and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969. He was stationed at Quang Tri and a member of the VMO-6 squadron until he was injured and honorably discharged/retired from the military. After his six month recovery at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, he returned home to Greenfield and attended mortuary school at Milwaukee Area Technical College. The family moved to Rhinelander in 1974, where they lived until 2013. Gregg was a funeral director for 32 years and co-owned Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, Disabled American Veterans and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Gregg and Chris retired in 2001, enjoying time at their homes in Nokomis, Fla. and on North Twin Lake in Phelps. Along with spending many summers in Ontario, Canada walleye fishing, where he lost many "biggest fish" bets to Chris, Gregg also loved spending time traveling, hunting with the guys at the cabin in Conover, and elk and mule deer hunting in Colorado and Wyoming. You could also find him enjoying his morning coffee with multiple coffee klatches catching up on the local "news."
Gregg was known to be the first on the dance floor, bartender on-call, Mr. Fix-it and, if you were at the receiving end of his sarcastic charm, you knew you were a friend to him.
He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughters Jennifer (Paul) Secor, Carrie Darton (Tyler Johnson); granddaughter, Kyra Secor; brother, Garth (Lisa) Darton; mother-in-law, Rita Wisniewski; sisters-in-law, Paula (Tom) Lynn, Deb (Mark) Unger, Mary Wisniewski, Claudia (Matt) Graf, Mary (Mike) Lauenstein; brothers-in-law, Mark (Julie) Wisniewski, Tom (Mary) Wisniewski, Jerry (Lara) Wisniewski, and Andrew Wisniewski; 27 nieces and nephews; and his cat, Willow.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, LaVerne and Gordon Darton; infant daughter, Jean Marie; father-in-law, Dr. Peter P. Wisniewski; and brother-in-law, Peter Wisniewski.
A Remembrance of Life will be held this summer in Wisconsin for family and friends.
