James Edward Anthony McLaughlin

James Edward Anthony McLaughlin, 78, of Rhinelander, passed away Dec. 27, 2020, at the Bay at Sheridan Health and Rehabilitation Center in Kenosha. James was born to James Richard McLaughlin, Sr. and Bertha (Nason) McLaughlin on Sept. 28, 1942, in Fairmont, Minn.

He proudly served in the Navy and fought for our freedom in the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1966. He later worked at Green Bay Packaging in Wausau for many years, as well as for the Rhinelander Daily News before retiring.

He met the love of his life, Mary Kubowski, in Wausau, where they wed on July 17, 1976. They eventually relocated to Rhinelander, where they spent the remainder of their lives together raising their adopted granddaughter, Breanna.

James enjoyed spending time with his wife, his family, and their chihuahua, Deevo, as well as watching Hallmark and war films. In May of 2016, James went on an Honor Flight. He called it "the flight of a lifetime" and one of his favorite memories, among many others.

James was a member of the Rhinelander VFW, American Legion, and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; his parents; his foster parents; two brothers, John and Joseph; a half-brother, James Lightfeather; and two sisters, Margaret and Patricia.

He is survived by his daughters, Breanna McLaughlin and Sarah (Chris) Wenzel, and sons, Rick (Cindy) McLaughlin; Jim Jr. (Missy) McLaughlin; and Ethan McLaughlin. He is also survived by his brother, Donald; three sisters, Marlys, Judy, and Mary; grandchildren Gabriel, Bill, Christian, Connor, Sean, and HollyAnn; and a great-grandchild, Ezra.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date. You may leave your private condolences for Jim's family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the McLaughlin family.
