Thomas R. Hageny

Thomas R. Hageny, age 73, of Rhinelander, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022, at Marshfield Medical Center in Minocqua. Tom was one of nine children born to Norbert and Julia (Thompson) Hageny.

He was married to Mary Burton on May 21, 1993. Together, they shared the most wonderful adventure God could have given them.

Tom was a 1966 graduate of the Rhinelander High School. After school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Tom returned to Rhinelander where he started his career with the Oneida County Sheriff's Department on May 15, 1971. He received his Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from the Nicolet Technical College. Tom proudly served the people of Oneida County until his retirement in 2002. He grew tired of sitting at home and went to work for Carquest Auto Parts for 10 years... then his wife let him retire in full and enjoy life at home!

Tom had a special interest in Little League baseball, coaching for 30 years. Special Olympics was also close to Tom's heart and he enjoyed the Torch Runs and working with all of the participants. Tom loved little people and enjoyed the benefits they added to his life. He was honored to have volunteered for many events throughout his life that benefited Oneida County.

Tom enjoyed life every day; he liked grilling, baking, and teasing and harassing people he had the pleasure to see each day. His stories were amazing! Tom enjoyed "retirement breakfast" with the Oneida County and Forest County retired officers; their talking of old stories and male comradery made his days. The coffee bunch he was with in the mornings added to his conversations for the day and his neighbors made his life full and wonderful. Racing the lawnmowers was something he also looked forward to.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Matt (Nicole), and grandson, Elliott; his daughter, Tara Wohlrabe, and granddaughters, Jessalyn and Blakelyn; his daughter, Teena (Mark) Novotny, and granddaughter, Sydney; his sisters-in-law, Linda Burton, Kevin Burton, and Annette Robinson; his brothers-in-law, Chuck Burton and Francis Burton; his sisters, Nancy Hobbs, Norma Riemer, and Donna Colburn; his brother, Jim (Carla) Hageny, and special brother, Greg (Mary) Bissonnette.

Tom is also survived by many nieces, nephew, and adopted nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Julia; his sisters, Judy, Irene, and Mary; his brother, John; his in-laws, Harold "Toastie" and Louise Burton; his very special nephew, Mason Novotny; and his first wife, Sharon.

Tom's life was full and happy. Thank you to all the people that touched his life and made it so wonderful. In support of Tom's involvement with Special Olympics and his career in criminal justice, memorials are appreciated to Special Olympics or the Nicolet College Criminal Justice Program.

Tom was a classmate and fellow law enforcement officer.. When I moved back to Rhinelander for a few years after the military I reconnected with Tom a few times and always enjoyed our visits. My condolences to his family.

Tom protected and served the people of Oneida County with honor and dedication. I give thanks for having his association when our departments joined in service. Rest in peace Tom. Be with GOD. My prayers and condolences go out to Mary and family..
