Lawrence Worth

Lawrence (Larry) Worth, long-time resident of Rhinelander, passed away at the age of 95 on July 9, 2022 in Riverside, Calif. He was the 6th child of Richard and Charlotte Worth, born on Dec. 15, 1926 in Milwaukee. His sisters and brothers included George, Ruth, Bernard, Russell, Bettye and Charlene.

Larry went to school at Shorewood Elementary and Whitefish Bay High School. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 where he served in the south Pacific until the end of World War II. After the war he returned home and married the love of his life, Barbara Louise Loebl, in 1949. He spent the early part of his career as a mason in the construction business with his father. Larry and his brother Russell formed L&R Worth Corp. Construction in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he and Barbara moved to the Mequon area where they raised their three sons Ted, Tim and Terry.

Larry shared the love of the outdoors with his young family and spent many vacations in the Northwoods where they would fish, camp, ski and hunt. In 1971, they purchased Birchwood Lodge on the Moen's Chain of Lakes in Rhinelander. Larry and Barb made long standing friendships with the neighbors in the community and the repeat guests that came back to Birchwood for two generations. Larry was involved in the community as a member of the Moen's Lake Community Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the 1996 Chamber President, and worked to build the current Chamber of Commerce building in Rhinelander. He served as an 8th District Supervisor for the Town of Pine Lake, he served two terms on the Oneida County Board of Supervisors and was greatly responsible for getting the new law enforcement complex built in Rhinelander. He was a volunteer and organizer of the annual Hodag Muskie Challenge, a supporter of the Northwoods Snowmobile Trails, and a supporter of the annual Hodag Music Festival. Larry sold the resort in 2005, two years after Barbara's death in 2003.

At age 78, an unexpected spark had been rekindled with a high school prom date after a 60-year separation. Larry was married to his second wife, Carol Page, in Maui, at sunset, by a native Hawaiian pastor and musicians that sang and danced for them on the beach. They enjoyed 13 fantastic years together in Dallas, Texas until Carol's passing in 2017. Her four children, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great provided an additional layer of love and endless joy!

Larry shared the last 5 years with his son Ted and wife Mary, in Riverside, Calif. He is survived by his youngest sister Charlene (Chuckie) Schaefer of Lake Wylie, S.C.; three sons and their spouses: Ted and Mary of Riverside, Calif.; Tim and Gay of Marquette, Mich.; Terry and Phyllis of Kewaunee; five grandchildren, Wess, Jesse, Tyler, Benjamin and Carrie (Worth) Peterson; and three great-grandchildren, Christine, Jessie and Story.

His wishes are to be cremated without any formal service.
