Gary M. Olson

Gary M. Olson, who grew up in Rhinelander, died Aug. 9, 2022 in Gainesville, Fla. at the age 85. He was born in Milwaukee on June 14, 1937 to Olaf B. Olson and Thora Marie Gade, but was raised in Oneida County where he loved fishing and hunting. Gary graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1954 and was the class salutatorian. He was also the editor of the yearbook, and as a junior, was on the Rhinelander debate team that won the Wisconsin State Championship in 1953.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. degree in Psychology in 1958. He was on the fencing team at the university and also served as President of Botkin Hall. Gary went to graduate school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill earning an M.A. and Ph.D. He moved to California to do his internship at the V.A. Hospital in Palo Alto. In California, Gary worked at Agnews State hospital in San Jose and Belmont Hills Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Belmont, where he was the director of acute inpatient care. He went into private practice and continued in that practice until he retired in 2013.

Gary had joined the Palo Alto Police Department as a reserve police officer in 1965 and worked part-time, and as needed for emergencies for two decades, during the late '60s and early '70s, a time of much civil unrest. Gary enjoyed working with the police department and was highly regarded by them. Because of his knowledge of police work and psychology, he became a consultant to numerous police departments in the Bay Area, helping with psychological evaluations of applicants for police positions and other personnel issues. He was also the President of the Behaviordyne Psychological Corporation which provided psychological services to the nuclear power industry.

Gary loved college football, reading, gardening, cars, travel, trips to the California Big Sur and Clearwater Beach, Florida. He married Gayle Boyer in 1965. After his retirement, they moved to Oak Hammock at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle, brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Nancy W. Boyer of Leesburg, Fla., nephew Steve Boney of Orlando, nephew Bryce Boyer and wife Wendy, two grandnieces: Macey and Marley Boyer, all of Apex, North Carolina.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of the memory unit and members of Community Hospice for their kindness and loving care for Gary during the last 6 months of his life.

There will be a private memorial service for the family at a later date.

Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, the Benevolent Fund at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida, and the University of Florida Foundation.
