Cheryl Marie Laakso

Cheryl Marie Laakso, 70, of Rhinelander, passed away on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, at Friendly Village Nursing & Rehab.

Cheryl was born in Milwaukee on Oct. 30, 1952, to her birth mother, Donna Fuller. She was raised in Kenosha and attended public schools in Kenosha. She met her future husband, Lynn Laakso, while he was a musician, playing the drums in the Harvey Nice Band. They were united in marriage in Kenosha in the courthouse on November 30, 1990. The couple lived in Kenosha, owning The Music Store Inc. in Racine until 1996. They moved to Mercer, owning the Grand Portage Resort for two years. They then moved to Rhinelander opening the Hodag Music Store which was located on Lincoln Street, operating the business until 2015.

Cheryl was a member of the Church of Christ. She was the founder of Meals for the Hungry at the Church of Christ.

She enjoyed arts and crafts and stamping, was an avid reader, especially Stephen King novels. Cheryl loved all her cocker spaniel dogs, and through the years owned 10 of them. She also enjoyed the outdoors and gardening.

Cheryl will always be remembered for her stubbornness and having a caring heart and expressing her love to others.

She will be dearly missed by her birth mother, Donna Fuller of Milwaukee; husband, Lynn; children, Angela (Duane) Lucas of Champlin, Minn., and Andrea (Laakso) Maxwell of Rhinelander; five grandsons, Michael McDermott III, Nicholas DeFilippis, Ezekiel Maxwell, Arlo Maxwell, Uriah Potter, and one great-granddaughter, Dazey Sward, and her four-legged companion, Gracie. Also surviving are other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Kempf; son-in-law William Maxwell, grandson Anthony Sward, and a brother, Charles Kempf.
