Joanna "Joan" Makris, age 98, of Rhinelander died on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, peacefully at home surrounded by her children. Joanna was born on April 22, 1924, in Louka, Greece.
Joanna married the late James (Sully) Makris on Jan. 16, 1948, in a large Greek Orthodox Church in Pireaus, Greece. After arriving to America, Joanna became a U.S. citizen.
Joanna grew up in Greece and worked on their family vineyard and farm until she came to the U.S. Then Joanna worked as a head cook at Peterson Health Care for 20 years.
Joanna was a devoted, loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was always her top priority. Her smile lit up the room whenever any of them walked into her house. She was known by later generations in the community as "YIA YIA" (meaning grandmother in Greek). Joanna's kitchen during the school years was a welcoming place for her son and grandchildren to bring their teammates to have lunch.
Everyone from a future NFL Hall of Famer, to those who became lifelong family friends sat at her kitchen table enjoying some of the best meals you could imagine. The aroma of her delicious authentic Greek cooking of meals, desserts, breads and pastries filled her house and could be smelled the first thing when opening her door to go inside. Joanna will be forever beloved and remembered by her family, friends and everyone that knew her.
Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, tending her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, canning fruits and vegetables and knitting. Joan was so proud of all her grandchildren and loved to attend and watch all their school and sporting events.
Joan is survived by her children: Alexandria "Bessie" Doering, William (Sue) Makris, Mary (Gordon) Walkush, Christine (Kurt) Carman and Victoria (Brock) Gehrig; her son-in-law Dale Lang, her grandchildren: James Makris, Christopher Makris, Michael Makris, Jason (Samantha) Doering, Troy (Kim) Doering, Melissa Bryner, Andrea (Bryan) Behrendt, Nicholas Carman, Christopher (Jaime) Carman, Brett Gehrig and Katrina (Kyle) Mattek; her great-grandchildren: Alexandria, Andrew, William, Hudson, Lleyton, Adeline and Amelia; her brother George Rekkas, and special family friend Nina Clark.
She was preceded in death by her husband James (Sully) Makris, her daughter Angeline Lang, her parents Loukas and Alexandria Rekkas, her brothers Nicholas and Evangelos and sisters Evangelia and Chrisula.
Visitation for Joan will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, at the Carlson Funeral Home. Private family services will be held followed by her interment in the Forest Home Cemetery.
