Mavis Joan Hicks

Mavis Joan (Freidig) Hicks, age 88, passed to eternal life on March 1, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson's, inclusion body myositis and heart disease. She was born on April 29, 1934, in Bellville, in Green County, the daughter of Grace Breuling and Frederick Albert Freidig. Mavis graduated from East High School, Madison, in 1952 and Madison General School of Nursing in 1955.

She moved to the Republic of Panama, following her marriage to Harry (Bud) Hicks in 1955, where she worked as a nurse at the Chiriquí Land Co. Hospital in Puerto Argüelles. In 1958, after the birth of their first child, they returned stateside and moved to Rhinelander, where she did private nurse duty. She retired in 1999, after 16 years as ward clerk at Taylor Park Nursing Home and Rehab in Rhinelander.

Mavis enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, riding her Hondamatic motorcycle to work, sewing, baking and attending her children's and grandchildren's activities. She had a special knack for devising special tools to help her with everyday tasks as her physical limitations progressed.

She is survived by her daughters Laurie Jo Bruckner of Rhinelander, Susan (Mark) Schmidt of Hartland, Dee (Ace) Grahl of Lac du Flambeau, Angela (Bill) Bishop, Rhinelander; her son Darin (Susan) Hicks of Rhinelander; her grandchildren Weston Schmidt of Basalt, Colo., Megan (Brandon) Basken of Stevens Point, Hannah Hicks of Berlin, and Hunter Hicks of Rhinelander, her six great-grandchildren James, Sofia and Mark Joseph Schmidt and Jack, Margaret-Mavis and Max Basken, her brother Larry (Barb) Freidig of Middleton, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents Grace and Frederick Freidig and her granddaughter Erin Grace Druckrey.

The family wishes to thank family and friends who made her life meaningful, happy and joyful. And to convey deep gratitude and love to all the caregivers that cared for her at home and at assisted living. Her spirit and attitude, and her smile, stayed strong until she returned to her heavenly Father.

Visitation for Mavis will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11 a.m., all at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rhinelander.
