Hilmer "Doc" Grantz
Hilmer "Doc" Grantz, age 93, of Rhinelander, died on Oct. 20, 2012, at Ministry St. Mary's Hospital, in Rhinelander. He was born on June 7, 1919, in Daggett, Mich., to Edward and Ida (Olesen) Grantz. He attended schools in Daggett, graduating from Daggett High School in 1937. He then attended Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor's degree. Shortly thereafter, Doc was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the medical corp during World War II, all over the Pacific theatre, especially Australia. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Seargent on June 10, 1945. Doc then returned to the Milwaukee area and was employed by Household Finance, Allis Chalmers, the Veterans Adm. and then Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. It later became PPG, and Doc was with them as safety and security director from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. Doc married Lorrraine Rasmussen on July 29, 1950, in Rhinelander.
After his retirement they lived in White Pine, Mich., until 1979, and then moved to Rhinelander in 1987. He was a life member of both the VFW and the American Legion. He was a very dedicated member of the Rhinelander Lions Club for many years. He spent countless hours volunteering with any and all projects the Lions had going. In his spare time Doc loved to bowl and play cards, especially cribbage and bridge.
He is survived by his son, William (Nancy) Grantz of Pewaukee; nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, on Dec. 21, 2008; and three brothers.
Funeral services for Doc will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until just prior to the services on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Northland Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial is being established in Doc's name for the Rhinelander Lions Club. The Carlson Funeral Home, (715) 369-1414/www.carlsonfh.com, is handling the arrangements for the Grantz family.

Doc was a very fine gentleman and a very dedicated Lion member.
He will be missed by family and his many friends.
