Dawn Schillings, "Beloved Mum"

As the creek behind her home glistened in the sunlight, and with her beloved birds peering in from the feeders hung outside her window, Dawn Schillings passed away Oct. 23, 2012, with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beloved dog, Kelsey, at her side.

Born in 1927, she met and married U.S. Army Sergeant William F. Schillings in her hometown of Brisbane, Australia, near the end of World War II and moved to Rhinelander in 1946. While she left her native country to raise a family in northern Wisconsin, her Aussie accent as well as her warm smile stayed with her throughout her life.

She dedicated her life to loving and spending as much time as possible with her eight children, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who will all agree that, along with being a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she also was one of the world's best cooks.

An active member of school PTAs while her children were in school, she also watched over many of Rhinelander's other children as Rhinelander's first school-crossing guard. She also was an active member of the Foreign Brides organization.

Two of her daughters live in Rhinelander while three of her daughters and two sons live outside the area.

Barry and his wife, Kris, who live in Kentucky, are the parents of grandchildren, Amy and Missy. Larry, who lives in New Jersey with his wife, Jean, are parents of grandchildren, Michael, Mark and Matthew. Susan Real and husband, David, live in Tulsa, Okla. Susan is the mother of granddaughters, Holley and Beasley. Kathy Desch lives in Green Bay with husband, Larry. They are the parents of grandchildren, Tricia, Nicole and Brad. Sherry Schillings lives with husband, Todd, in Rhinelander, and is the mother of grandsons, Bill and Robert Hanselman. Robbie Schillings also lives in Rhinelander with Jeremy. She is the mother of grandsons, Heath and Jason Somers. Lynne, who lives in De Pere with husband, Rick, are the parents of grandchildren, Meghan and Sam.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; and son, Tom, who is the father of granddaughter Tommi.

Graveside service will be Oct. 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating. Hildebrand Russ Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A memorial has been established in Dawn's name and may be given to the family. All are invited to light a candle and leave an online condolence at hildebrandfh.com.

Special thanks to the 2nd floor staff and Hospice of Ministry St. Mary's Hospital and Lana for her long time loving care. Mum will be loved forever by those she loved.

Always knowing the Schillings family, it seemed as though you all surrounded my brother, sister and myself in school. I had time to enjoy Dawn during the 1980s with your baby sister Lynne. Thank You Lynne for sharing your Mum with me.
