Doris M. Beckley
Doris M. Beckley, of Rhinelander, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013. Doris was born 91 years ago, to Lawrence and Cora (Disch) Retherford, at their Harshaw homestead, the second of seven children.
At the age of four, she began her education in a one-room schoolhouse in Harshaw. During the snowy winter months, transportation was provided by her father's sleigh and team of horses. Doris graduated from Rhinelander High School, with the class of 1938, at the age of 16. She then traveled to St. Paul, Minn., where she attended beauty school. Upon graduation, Doris moved to Milwaukee, where she eventually owned and operated the Peggy Kay Beauty Shop, on N. Oakland Avenue.
On July 7, 1945, Doris was united in marriage, with John Beckley, in Milwaukee. In 1947, the couple returned to Harshaw. Doris then began her career as homemaker and mother, which became her full-time job, raising five children, and offering assistance and advice on the nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren that followed.
Doris' day typically began with a cup of black coffee and a crossword puzzle. Until her health prevented her from gardening, Doris tended a beautiful perennial flower garden during the summer, and kept busy in the winter crocheting gorgeous afghans for family members.
Doris is survived by her five children, Terry (Barb) Beckley of Pharr, Texas, Corie (Bob) Kettner of Rhinelander, Debra Lehne of Rhinelander, Dixie (Sparky) Stimart of Harshaw, and Larry Beckley of Harshaw. She is further survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; three brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services for Doris will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Carlson Funeral Home, (715) 369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery in the Town of Cassian.
