Gloria "Jeanne" Nelson

Gloria "Jeanne" Nelson, age 84 of Rhinelander, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017, in the company of her family at Seasons of Life Hospice in Woodruff. She was born Feb. 22, 1933, in Rhinelander, to Harold and Marie (Peterson) Marquardt.

Jeanne attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School. She graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1952 and won the title of Winter Carnival Queen that year. On Aug. 9, 1952, she married Robert K. Nelson in Rhinelander. The couple moved to Tomahawk where Jeanne was employed at Harley Davidson. Jeanne and her family resided in Tomahawk for 22 years before returning to Rhinelander in 1975. She worked in security at the Rhinelander Oneida County Airport before joining Triumph Twist Drill as an inspector, later retiring from the company.

Jeanne was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in both Tomahawk and Rhinelander. Among her hobbies and interests, Jeanne loved to knit and crochet, play bingo, and trips to the casino. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Terri Nelson of Rhinelander; two sons, Robert (Christine) Nelson of Merrill and Richard (Valorie) Nelson of Tomahawk; 15 loving grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Janet) Marquardt of Rhinelander; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert in 1988; son, Russell Nelson in 2011; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lani Nelson in 2015; and a brother, Butch Eldore Marquardt in 2013.

A celebration of Jeanne's life will take place on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Mulligan's Restaurant and Pub at the Northwoods Golf Course beginning at noon. Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is assisting the family and condolences may be forwarded at

I was a school friend of Jeanne and loved to watch her skate. Sorry for your loss!
