Dorothy "Dottie" M. Schwalbe
Dorothy "Dottie" M. Schwalbe, age 89, of the Town of Sugar Camp, died at home with her family on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018. She was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Highland Park, Ill., the daughter of Willis and Lillian Dever Sr. Dottie was a 1947 graduate of Highland Park High School. Dorothy married the love of her life, Walter Schwalbe on Nov. 26, 1949 in Highland Park.
Walt and Dottie and their family lived in Brookfield for many years. In her younger years, she was employed by the telephone company, and then helped her husband run his veterinary practice in West Allis. Dottie enjoyed many family vacations by houseboat, plane and riding motorcycle with Walt. They purchased a cottage on Two Sisters Lake, in Lake Tomahawk, they then purchased land and a home in Sugar Camp, where they built and ran Sugar Camp Enterprise. In 1989, with help from their son Scott, they built and opened Sugar Camp Midway Gas Station where Dottie enjoyed working the rest of her life. Dottie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Walt's passing the Sugar Camp community was her life. She knew many community members (and summer vacationers) who made special trips into the gas station to just say hi to her.
Survivors include her two children Scott (Deborah) Schwalbe and Laura (Robert) Klug; five grandchildren Kathy Bougie (Perry), Carrie (John) Kellner, Jon (Devin) Klug, Amy (Jarrod) Huebner, Ryan Schwalbe; 10 great-grandchildren Noah, Rex, Spencer, Violet, Walter, Amelia, Thomas "Tommy", Blake, Weston and Rowan. She was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter Perri Dorothy and by two brothers William Dever and Willis "Punkie" Dever Jr. Dottie once again walks with her beloved Walt and is holding her great-granddaughter, Perri Dorothy, in her warm embrace.
Dorothy's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Ascension St. Mary's Hospital staff (ICU & special care units) and Ascension Home Care Hospice, Rhinelander.

I met Dottie quite a few years ago when my late husband worked at the Sugar Camp Midway. I spent quite a bit of time there early on in our relationship and Dottie was always so pleasant and welcoming to me. She really made it a great place to work and the Schwalbes treated my husband like family. I know he cared for them deeply. Thinking of you and sending you peace.
