Helen Eva Swanson, age 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019 at Avanti Health and Rehab in Minocqua. She was born on Jan 24, 1928, in Fifield, to Ernie Swift and Rosalia Tarr.
After high school graduation from Madison West in 1948 she came to Boulder Junction to work at Dairyman's Country Club where she met her future husband Frederick Swanson and they married on Sept. 13, 1950 in Boulder Junction.
When her kids were young she was a den mother for the Boy Scouts. Later she volunteered at the hospital, delivered Meals on Wheels, enjoyed cooking and baking, was known for her "Swanson Cookies", enjoyed making pasties a few times a year and getting the grandkids involved, loved sewing and knitting, camping with the family. After retirement her and Fred traveled throughout the United States. In 1989 they started participating in archeology digs with the Forest Service. She put in many volunteer hours at the Rhinelander Food Pantry. She was an avid reader, making weekly visits to the library, and always had a crossword puzzle nearby. She enjoyed numerous gambling trips to Las Vegas, Laughlin and local casinos.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 65 years where she worked in the kitchen, served as Sunday school teacher, was a member of the Cover Girls making mission quilts, enjoyed lefse making each fall and serving her Lord any way He saw fit.
She is survived by her children: Susan Swanson, Dennis Swanson and Rick (Billie Jo) Swanson, all of Rhinelander; her grandchildren Christie, Matt, Nicole and Christian and great-grandchildren Mason and Ricky; her fur baby Reva, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Swanson in 2002, sister Thelma Stassi in 2016, brother Dennis Swift in 2003; and her parents. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity or her charity the Cover Girls of Trinity Church, the Rhinelander Food Pantry or the Rhinelander District Library.
A Celebration of life will be held for Helen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rhinelander on Dec. 28, 2019 at 11 a.m. with pastor Kari Vadis officiating. There will be a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until just prior to the service at the church. You may leave your private condolences for the Swanson family at www.carlsonfh.com. My parents and I lived out on Faust Lake Road and were part of a group of neighbors in the 50s that included your parents. I was in grade school then but remember your mom well. There was a combined birthday party for Sue and my cousin, Peggy Feight, when they were just one year old. Your mom lived a good life.
