Ruth M. Carstensen

Ruth M. Carstensen, age 93, of Rhinelander, passed away on Sunday evening, March 8, 2020 at Rennes Health & Rehab and under the care of Ascension at Home Hospice.

Ruth was born in Rhinelander on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1926, the daughter of Arthur W. and Noella (Schliesmann) Hall. The Schliesmann family have been a part of Rhinelander for many years and were one of the founding families of St. Mary's Hospital and St. Mary's Catholic Church and School. The Hall family lived in Rhinelander and Wausau. Ruth attended Saint Mary's Grade School and was a 1945 graduate of Rhinelander Union High School. During high school, Ruth worked part time at Woolworths on Brown Street in Rhinelander and St. Mary's Hospital until graduation.

In 1944, through a mutual friend, Ruth met Martin Carstensen whom she would marry on Aug. 4, 1945 at the Parsonage at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The couple lived in Milwaukee and Rhinelander and Florida but always called Rhinelander home.

Ruth was proud to be a member of the D.A.V.A. where she served as their Commander for 29 years. She was also a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church.

She will be dearly missed by her five children from a beautiful marriage: Mary (Bernard) Stern of Appleton, Stephen (Peggy) Carstensen of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Judith Ann Zarm (Norb Zaffran) of Rhinelander, Jean Marie Chabre of Dothau, Ala. and Michael (Cecille) Carstensen of Evans, Ga.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hall of Antigo, and Nancy Hall of Jasper, Florida. She is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur W. and Noella (Schliesmann) Hall; husband, Martin Carstensen in 2004; son-in-law; Russell Zarm and by two brothers, Arthur Hall and Robert Hall.

The visitation for Ruth will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 (TODAY) at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at 125 E. King Street, from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Mariadas Vallabhaneni will officiate. Immediately following the mass, there will be a procession to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery for the Committal Service.
