George T. Kirby

George T. Kirby, 73, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Seasons of Life in Woodruff, with his wife by his side. George was born Feb. 13, 1947 in Ironwood, Mich., to Lucille (Romanowski) and Joseph (Neil) Kirby.

George attended elementary school at St. Mary's Catholic School and then graduated from Rhinelander Union High School in 1965.

George began his adult life working as a sales representative for St. Regis Paper Company and, eventually, transferred to their Chicago office. After three years, he returned home when he accepted a position with Dexter Cihla Insurance. He eventually purchased the agency and formed a partnership with Ron Douglas.

On Aug. 26, 1967 George married his high school sweetheart, Diana Terzynski and together raised two sons, Michael and Peter. George enjoyed hunting, especially looking forward to deer season with his sons, grandson and friends. The last few years they spent at Pitlik's Sand Beach Resort and they had many amazing memories there. He also spent the last 40 years hunting in Montana with his buddies. He loved to pheasant and turkey hunt, and got much pleasure from just walking in the woods and enjoying the fresh air.

After retirement, his part-time hobby of cleaning guns turned into a full-time job that gave him much pleasure. Recently, George found a love of reading. He also enjoyed working on his lawn and was very particular with his mowing techniques. He was a good cook and even tried his hand at baking. His specialty was white chocolate cranberry cookies. Of course, George was an avid Packers fan and he also enjoyed the Brewers spring training during his Arizona winters.

George was a member of the Rhinelander Country Club for over 35 years. He was President of the Police and Fire Commission and, most recently, the President of the Rhinelander City Council. The last five years were spent traveling with his wife to Arizona, Texas and a long road trip east. He truly enjoyed driving the countryside with his wife, and not one of those thousands of miles with the radio on, silence is golden! If you were fortunate to have known George, you would know what the definition of a true friend was, an honorable human being, who was admired and respected, his intentions always principled and good, a more humble man would be hard to find.

George is survived by his wife Diana, his sons Michael (Cindy) of Menomonee Falls, and Peter (Nicole) of Merrill, his grandchildren Emma and Austyn, his brother, Charles (Joanne) Kirby of Rochester, Minn., Aunt Carole Romanowski of Hurley, sister-in-law, Linda Prei of Rhinelander and special friend Ron Bengtson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

"I love you George! I always have and always will the rest of my days" Diana
