Maxine "Mickey" Steil

Maxine "Mickey" Steil, age 80, of Rhinelander, died on Feb. 25, 2021 at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. She was born on May 8, 1940 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of George and Ruth (Pittack) Steil.

Mickey was raised in Omaha and attended schools there. After high school she attended the Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb. and graduated with a degree in teaching. She began her career as a Lutheran elementary school teacher in Des Moines, Iowa. She then taught in Skokie and finally in Park Ridge, Ill. from 1970 to 1978. In July of 1978 she moved to Rhinelander and has lived here since.

Mickey enjoyed living in Rhinelander and she loved her church and church family at St. Mark Lutheran Church. She served the church in many ways especially as an organist for services, weddings and funeral, for nearly 25 years. With her Christian background as her guide, Mickey also volunteered for many organizations in the Rhinelander community. She enjoyed visiting with others and serving them in any way she could.

Mickey is survived by her sisters Beth Zobel and Phyllis (Lyle) Kurth, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and her very close friends Tom and Laurie Wille. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ardene Wright, her brother Gerald Steil and her very close friends, Ted and Lila Clement.

Visitation for Mickey will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m., all at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Rhinelander on Friday, March 5, 2021. Reverend Richard Miller will officiate. Masks will be required, social distancing will be observed and attendance will be limited for the funeral service.

The service will also be live-streamed and can be found at www.stmarkrhinelander.org. Interment will be in the Westlawn Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. You may leave your private condolences for Mickey's family at www.carlsonfh.com.

The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving Mickey's family.

Mickey was my beloved aunt and my sponsor. She always held a special place in my heart. Although I miss her daily, God received a fantastic person when he took Mickey home.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. When we moved to Rhinelander and first attended St. Mark Mickey made sure we were welcome. She got us involved with the food pantry and was always interested in the health and well being of our special needs adult son Nik. Due to an eye surgery I missed the last food pantry date and only emailed her. And of course with the COVID issue we did not see her in person for the last months. A TrueLy wonderful Christian woman! Rest in His Peace Mickey.
