Sandra Jean McKenzie, age 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep March 11, 2021 in Rhinelander. As a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, her strength and faith in God guided her through a good life and assisted her during difficult circumstances. Now was the time for her to be with God. She was happy to have been able to remain living in her home until the end. She cherished her family and her home, devoting her best to take care of all. After working all day she would still have a good home cooked meal on the table at the end of the day. And the home was always kept clean. She believed holidays were meant to be family time and made them special. Besides spending time with family, she enjoyed giving gifts and cards as a way to share her love. She was a talented artist who enjoyed gardening, craft fairs, painting, knitting, the Green Bay Packers, watching Hallmark movies and Dina Mia pizza nights.
Sandy was the first born of Harold and Edith Stanley, with two younger sisters, Donna Arndt and Karen Zettler. She briefly lived in California as a child, but lived most of her life in Rhinelander. She was hospitalized and battled polio as a child and struggled with post-polio syndrome in later years. During her senior year, she met her husband James McKenzie and married him after graduating from Rhinelander High School. They had a beautiful wedding at Immanuel Lutheran Church Aug. 28, 1958 and spent the next 43 years together until James passed away in February 2001. Sandy worked for the Rhinelander school district and then for many years at Ripco Credit Union.
Sandy is survived by four children, Tammy (husband, Mark Schuler), Amy (husband, David DeNoble), Steve (wife, Vanessa McKenzie), and Becky. Blessed with nine grandchildren, Greta, Sten, Rose, and Harold; Austin, Logan, and McKenna; Caleb and Gabriel; and two great-grandchildren, Vivian and Henry.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be planned later, pending the opening of COVID restrictions. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sandy's name to Paralyzed Veterans of American, The National Wildlife Federation or a charity of choice. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the McKenzie family.
Sandy lived across the street from me as a child and through the polio. We spent many hours together, and she has often been in my thoughts. I loved her dearly. Prayers for her family.
