Raymond Joseph Schmeling

Raymond Joseph Schmeling, age 88, of Rhinelander, died on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022 at his home. He was born in Milwaukee to Frederick and Marie (Weidig) Schmeling on Aug. 14, 1933.

Ray attended schools in Milwaukee and graduated from Pius High School in 1951. In 1953 he married his wife of 68 years, Barbara. During that time Ray had started his apprenticeship in the tool, die and gauge making industry. In 1955 he graduated from trade school and worked in the Milwaukee area as a supervisor for 31 years. In 1981 they moved to Rhinelander and Ray started at Twist Drill as a tool and maintenance supervisor. He worked at Twist Drill until his retirement in 1998.

Ray spent the last 24 years of his retirement as a gunsmith and could fix anything as long as it didn't involve electrical. He enjoyed many things but his family was always the most important. The time spent with his family and his long lasting friendships were the most important part of his life.

Ray is survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Carrie (Rick) Mlady of Rhinelander, Sue (Jim) Cox of Ingleside, Ill., son Michael (Karin) Schmeling of Greenfield; grandchildren Rebecca (Aaron), Rachel (Duffy), Barbara (Keith), Zachary (Marissa); great-grandchildren Ryan, Elizabeth, Lorelei, Samuel; brother David of Milwaukee, other family and many friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents', brothers Jack, Frank, Paul, Jimmy, Lawrence, Joe, Danny, and sister Mary.

The family would like to direct contributions to Compassus Hospice of Rhinelander.

A visitation will be held for Ray at the Carlson Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m.

You may leave your private condolences for the Schmeling family at www.carlsonfh.com.

The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is handling the arrangements for the family.

I got to know Ray as he worked for Triumph Twist Drill and i worked at Motion Industries. He was one of my favorite customers as he was always kind and considerate. He was a quite man who spoke often of his family. He would also slip in a joke or two, but he was always a gentleman. I was thrilled when i finally met Barbara at a Jennings picnic. I know he will be missed by many.EBX7N9
