A Chorus of the Community to present 'The Messiah' Dec. 18 at Rhinelander High School

A Chorus of the Community will perform George Frederic Handel's "The Messiah" Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., in the Rhinelander High School auditorium.

Chorus members are from a number of Northwoods communities including Tomahawk, Three Lakes, Eagle River, Sugar Camp, Lake Tomahawk, and Rhinelander. Chorus members have been rehearsing weekly since early November and many were singers in the 2010 revival of this community tradition. The chorus is under the direction of Mary Peterson and the piano accompaniment will be provided by Carla Strong.

The Woodland Strings will play holiday selections before the performance and will also be featured in the Overture and Pastoral Symphony portions of "The Messiah."

Soloists for this 2012 production will be Mike Messerli, tenor, Darrell Schmidt, bass, Christi Lobermeier, mezzo soprano, Paul Peterson, bass, Lori Hunter, soprano, Sandra McKitrick, soprano, Michelle Bennett, soprano, and Desiree Wattelet, soprano.

"The Messiah" was composed in 1741, in just 24 days. The text was taken from the Bible and first performed in Dublin, Ireland, for charitable purposes. Handel conducted the performance. It was received with such acclaim that it became an annual event.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door.

Proceeds from the concert will fund a scholarship to a Rhinelander High School graduate attending Nicolet College.
