'The Crucible' to Rhinelander High School
On May 16, director Jim Nuttall and several actors from the recent Nicolet Players production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" visited Rhinelander High School to perform a selection of scenes for approximately 200 students. The run of "The Crucible" at Nicolet College ended last week, but Cavan Kelly (Reverend Samuel Parris), Charles Lynch (John Proctor), Maya Paulson (Abigail Williams), and Nicole Swanson (Susanna Walcott), took the stage in the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center to perform four scenes from the play for the attending students, school officials said in a press release.
Between each selection, Nuttall also provided insights as a director into the character development, stagecraft, and historical context of the play.
Although "The Crucible" is a dramatization of the events of the Salem Witch Trials, Arthur Miller wrote it as commentary on McCarthyism, as his own life and that of his friends were caught up in the turmoil of the Red Scare. In addition, there are many different versions of the play, as Miller made several changes to the characterization and sequencing of events, all of which was explained by Nuttall during the visit.
"This performance was attended by students who were enrolled in English Survey 2 this year, a class that reads 'The Crucible' as part of its curriculum," the release states. "There is a significant difference between reading a play and seeing it performed, and thanks to the generosity of the Nicolet Players in attendance, students were able to see both community members - and fellow students, in the case of Maya Paulson and Nicole Swanson - bring life and new meaning to the play that they've read in class this year."
