As the holidays approach, students in the School District of Rhinelander are learning they can make a difference for strangers near and far. As an explaine, Mrs. Belanger's kindergarten class at Pelican School has been busy (like little elves) making the holidays a little brighter.
"Each year I contact the Veterans' Administration in Tomah, and they send me paper mittens that are picked off their wishing tree listing needed items for certain veterans. I then ask staff via email or friends on Facebook if they would like to pick a mitten (or two). The response has been amazing. Three years ago, I started with donations for two mittens and it has now grown to currently just over 30 collaboratively, " Mrs. Belanger explained in a press release.
This year, Mrs. Gerth's 4K students and Ms. Kaster's first-grade class joined in with their own kindness and made cards with special messages inside for the veterans. There were more than 50 cards collected, Belanger noted.
"Each classroom at Pelican School starts the day with a morning meeting to build community," the release states. "In these meetings we discuss different topics such as kindness, play collaborative games or activities and write a positive message for the day. So what better way to give then to have student made snowflakes, bookmarks and candy cane reindeer for veterans at the Tomah Hospital."
