The Rhinelander High School mock trial team placed second in a regional tournament held last Saturday at the Marathon County Courthouse.
Rhinelander was one of seven teams that competed at the regional tournament in Wausau, and one of 108 total high school teams participating in different regional tournaments throughout the State of Wisconsin that same day, school district officials announced in a press release.
The competition is sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin.
RHS walked away with the second place trophy, ensuring their right to compete at the state competition to be held at the State Capitol in Madison on March 13-14. Unfortunately, however, the team had to forego that right, as several members of the team are already committed to attending school-sponsored trips to Germany and Paris that same weekend, the release notes. As a result, the third place team, Wausau West, will compete in Rhinelander's place at the state competition. D.C. Everest was awarded first place honors at the regional tournament.
Earlier in the season, RHS took the first place trophy at a scrimmage held at the Brown County Courthouse in Green Bay. RHS was one of 16 teams that competed at the scrimmage. In addition, senior Holly Puza was recognized as a top contender for "Best Attorney."
The mock trial program provides high school students with an opportunity to act as attorneys and witnesses in a court case developed by the State Bar of Wisconsin. This year, the students were presented with a civil case involving the fictional drowning of a high school student at a country club. Students were required to address two alternative theories of liability, one pertaining to the country club's alleged vicarious liability for negligent training and supervision of an employee and the other pertaining to the country club's alleged negligent maintenance and supervision of the pool area.
The team is coached by Ali Francois, a local attorney and court commissioner. Francois was assisted this season by Ben Kubisiak, a former RHS mock trial student and current freshman at St. Norbert College.
