School District of Rhinelander to start free meal distribution Monday
Families can get food two days a week for children under 18
By River NEws Staff

The United States Department of Agriculture has approved the plan that School District of Rhinelander food service manager Pat Karaba designed to provide meals to district students during the state-mandated closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The meal distribution will begin Monday, according to a press release issued Thursday afternoon. The district will be offering meals to students "to help ease the burden during these difficult times," the release states.

Breakfast and lunches will be available for any child in the district who is 18 years old or younger.

"The meal will follow USDA guidelines for school meals, and will include fruit, vegetables and milk along with a sandwich or breakfast item. Ingredients will be packaged separately to maintain quality and freshness, with the intent that they may be consumed the day of, or the following day if they are stored under refrigeration," the release explains.

To maintain social distancing and make this service as convenient as possible, a drive-through pick-up service using the driveway at the front entrance of Rhinelander High School will be set up on the morning and afternoon on the days offered. Families can choose the time that best meets their needs.

Distribution will be on Mondays and Thursdays, with parents being able to choose between 7-9 a.m. or 3-5 p.m. to best suit their ability to take part.

"We will utilize the driveway in the front of Rhinelander High School and have a representative there to distribute the meals as you pull through," the release states. "Please remain in your car."

There is no preordering necessary, and the meals are being provided free of charge. If your family has participated in the food backpack program, extra supplies will be available at Rhinelander High School each Thursday while school is closed. For more information, call Karaba at 715-365-9547 or email karabpat@rhinelander.
